@SJH  To make sure I'm understanding what you wrote, you're suggesting a full camera reset, we set-up our cameras as we like, and do NOT import any previous user profiles?

I have a M11 and M11-M and have experienced cards issues on both since firmware 2.0.2.  I did set-up a user profile once on one of them (can't remember which one).  My roundabout point being, I'm not sure user profiles are the root issue here.  Regardless, doing a full reset and reconfiguring the camera is easy enough to do.  I'll give that a go and see how things go for a week or two.

Yes that’s correct do a full reset and build profiles from there rather than import them.

Cameras reset, etc... we'll see what happens.  Curiously, after resetting the M11 multiple times, it refuses to roll back to folder "100LEICA".  It keeps advancing by +1 each time I reset the camera (and yes, I'm selling the option to reset the numbering).  Whereas the M11-M rolled all the way back 100LEICA.  Probably the internal storage retaining a counter (that it should not after a camera + counter reset).

It took all of 3 shots for things to go sideways with the Leica M11 after a full reset (multiple times)...  I've gone back to storing images to internal memory and not putting memory cards in the cameras.

Did you try to format your card with SD Card Formatter? Worked fine for me for a good ten years.

Two years after release date and still these issue persist.  I really want an M11 for multiple reasons, but it may be a lost cause and better to wait for the M12.  The fact that the M11-P was released with these same issues really signals that sales are more important to Leica than working cameras.

And NOT using SD formatter has worked fine for almost two decades of digital M's for me. The only difference - I don't have an M11. With no modern camera manufacturer, esp one that charges nearly 10K for a body, should one have to resort to third party software to 'maybe' make it work better with the most basic function, formatting and then writing images to the memory card. Nikon, Fuji, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Hasselblad, Ricoh/Pentax are all rolling their eyes at Leica.

Different experience here. First SD card issues i had with my M240, then with my Sony A7s. Was about 10 years ago. SD Card Formatter fixed the issues so since then i format all my cards with it. Works fine. Don't ask me why. Is it due to SD Card Formatter or not, i don't know. All i can say is i've got no freeze or whatever issues with my M11 since firmware 1.6.1. Great camera. My best M since my first M4 (1971). YMMV.

I thought I'd cast my mind back over all the digital cameras I've had and used, since 1999. I came up with:

Nikon D1

Nikon D2H

Nikon D3

Nikon D4

Canon EOS-1DX

Canon EOS 5D mk2

Canon EOS 5D mk4

Canon G5

Canon G9

Canon G15

Canon S95

Leica M9-P

Leica M9 Monochrom

Leica M11

Ricoh GR3

The pro Canon and Nikon cameras on the list, I've used day in and day out, for many years, for my job at a newspaper. I never once, ever, had a problem formatting cards in any of these cameras. It just isn't an issue I've ever run into. It would never have occurred to me to format cards any other way than in the camera. I suppose, if I'd run into problems, I might have looked into alternative methods. But thats never happened, in 24 years.

I'm one of those fortunate forum members who has a thus far trouble-free Leica M11. Well, the occasional over-exposed frame when shot on Auto, but that's it. I'm still running firmware 1.6.1, and don't use the photo app, or any lens adapters. My heart goes out to those on here, who are having trouble with the software in their M11s. It must be incredibly frustrating.

I Googled SD Formatter, because this thread keeps coming back to it. Top answer is 'a reliable app designed to help you format and recover files from a damaged SD card easily'. If using SD Formatter works for you, and you're happy, then that's great. It just seems to me that having to download third party software as a workaround for an £8K camera that can't be trusted to format SD cards is far from ideal. I don't think I would find that at all acceptable.

I’m in the middle of a trip when this happened to me today…

I got a message saying SD card is full and then everything turned into red dots scattered across the black frame. I’ve putted in a new SD card and everything seems to be in working order again but I’m really worried that all the photos from the last few days of the trip is gone. I won’t be able to access a computer til I get home in a week but does anyone know if the photos would still be ok on the corrupted sd card

I had this happen just once with a Lexar card - very strange behavior - in that I took the photos and saw them come up on the lcd, and then later when I put the card in the reader, those pics were missing, as was the entire folder (I had just reset numbering).

I never recovered the images, but after resetting the numbers again it works again. Now I’m a little nervous - guess I better reformat the card in camera ASAP! I didn’t realize so many others had similar issues…

Let it be a lesson, get better cards, many problems come from Lexar.

On the osMac I had better success using "Disk Drill" to recover images from a friend.

Has anyone been able to retrieve the lost images? 2 weeks in Burgundy and I have lost all the photos including snow which is now rare for the region!

I was able to retrieve my images by reinserting the card back into the camera and using the usb cable. The images showed up in photos (Mac) and I downloaded them from there. After formatting the card in camera and resetting the numbering - I have been solid!

During my trip to Budapest I’ve gotten an error “SD Card full” .. but I had only a few shots on it .. The card was formatted on my MacBook with sd card formatter .. but this time it didn’t worked out .. then I’ve inserted another sd card that I’ve used before.. an empty and formatted one.. and I got the same error.. then I formatted it in the camera.. and it all worked well during my trip .. that’s a new case for me and wanted to share with you ..

For me, in order not to lose frames, at the moment the only reliable way is to shoot on the internal memory. After the internal memory is full, I copy its contents to the SD card using the appropriate menu item. Then I format the internal memory and continue shooting. For many years, Leica never learned to work with fast memory cards, so the internal memory is both more reliable and faster. Of course, like everyone else, I’m waiting for firmware fixes, but we all know that our favorite manufacturer is not very efficient in such matters
