latest info from Leica / Wetzlar:

Zitat

The technician informed me that the device must be sent to our workshop in order to downgrade the firmware. It cannot be done remotely.
I also asked our technical information service about this matter and they said that the function will be added back with the next firmware update. However, there is still no date when it will be released.

so we still need to be patient...

I`ve never upgraded the firmware in my SL2s and reading daily the recent firmware updates woes highlighted on this board I have no intention of doing so.

Clearly its not one on Leica`s core skills.

In December last year, LUF Admin confirmed that Leica were considering the reinstatement of the joystick zoom function, for M lens focus, in a future firmware update. Together with the indication at #241 that this will happen, and 13 pages of comments largely supportive of it, I do think that Leica will (eventually!) sort this out. Regardless of our ability to use the thumbwheel for magnifying the EVF image, some of us either prefer to use the joystick or, as I do, utilise both. I cannot think that removing the function in the first place was anything other than an error. If it was a conscious decision, I would have preferred Leica to explain (in the firmware 6.0 notes, maybe?) that it had been removed for x/y reason. This way, users would have had the opportunity to weigh up, in advance, the decision to update or not. I have never updated firmware (and never will) until it’s been live for at least a month and real users have reported on the benefits and pitfalls. Ultimately, updated firmware should enhance functionality - but not normally at the cost of existing useful features. Because users on this LUF reported this mistake quickly, I didn’t update. I still haven’t and I won’t until the expected future one corrects it.
Thanks, again, for keeping this a live issue deep_blue /Zitat.

I think with their limited resources, you can forget about joystick zoom forever
They are not going to support Leica SL2 with SL3, Q3, M11 and other possible launches

Then they should not release cameras they cannot support.

Agreed.

Perhaps less budget going to the influencers and the video mini epics and more resources going into the day job maybe.

They released a firmware update for the original SL this March. I can't think of any other brand still improving nine-year-old cameras.

I’m sure the M11 owners with freezing cameras are all over the moon about that.

I haven't followed those threads because I don't have an M11. Are you getting freezing issues after the latest firmware update? I recall that the issue was specifically called-out in the release notes.

At what cost to other users though.

Maybe they are spreading themselves too thin and need to  take a fresh look at their priorities

Good to know. Clearly Leica is working on all of these issues. I doubt that the SL FW set them back much, if any.

It does point-out why tweaking the joystick functionality on the SL2 might not be the top priority right now.

I have an SL2s and an M11. Luckily, my M11 doesn’t have any issues—a few freezes before the new firmware, nothing major. After the new firmware, I haven’t had any issues, but I haven’t used the camera enough to say how good or bad the firmware is. However, I can say that Leica has a disaster on its hands with the M11. How widespread the issue is, we can’t really say, but considering it’s the only thing you find when Googling “M11,” they should have at least come out with a statement denying it or acknowledging that they are working on it.

Terrible handling of the situation. It will not destroy Leica, but it will destroy the reputation of the M11.

As a leica user I feel like leica has a horrible software and quality department and makes me very doubtful about upgrading my sl2s to s3.

The real problem in upgrading from the SL2S is the resolution jump. The SL2S S is deliberately limited to 24 MP for good reasons, you’d lose that on the SL3. Better wait for a possible SL3S.

I am confused....

On my SL2-s firmware 6.0 when using my R lenses on the Urth adapter pressing the joystick will trigger magnification.

In fact I cannot make it do otherwise for instance AE-L

This seems to be a quirk of using a third party adapter. If you check the very early posts in this thread, Malabito explains how he retained it (joystick zoom magnification for focusing M lenses) when using a Novaflex adapter. It certainly doesn’t work with the M/L adapter - although I don’t use R lenses so can’t comment on the proprietary Leica R/L adapter; I assume it’s the same and won’t work, either.  It’s a bit ironic and perhaps another reason to speculate that removing the function is a cock-up rather than a strategy.

That's the main concern with a lot of users. It depends on the adapter. Users would have been much less upset if Leica had essentially said "this is the new behaviour going forward for all types of adapters and all SL cameras." It would take users a day or two to get used to it, and that would be that. Instead we've got a mutating user interface. Photographers have to constantly second-guess, if they have more than one adapter, or camera (the SL hasn't been changed, as far as I know).

One could argue that Leica wants you to use Leica's adapters exclusively, and also trade-in older SL bodies, but Leica's adapters aren't compatible with all Leica lenses (1-cam Leicaflex lenses, L39 screw-mount), and that SL that you traded-in will end-up with someone else who will have the same problem.
