Jammy Dodger Posted November 10, 2023 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just been out with the M11 'trying' to do some night street photography; this is the first time I have used the camera since installing firmware 2.0.1. I suffered the following issues; No control over exposure - the camera frequently over expossed massively in highlight protected and multi paatern (approx 1 in 5 shots were just blown out! Frequent freezes where I had to pull the battery settings would not stay as I set them. Not very impressed with my Leica Digital camera - I am rapidly loosing my love for photography! Please stick with a Japanese Brand; Leica digital are no where near as good electronically.

LeicaR10 Posted November 11, 2023 Share #4 Posted November 11, 2023 (edited) Jammy Dodger, First, welcome to forum. You will find photographers in the forum that have many decades of experience and most are well meaning in trying to help resolve issues or offer suggestions, myself included. Second, I understand your angst with the M11 and have read a number of photographers who have issues with the M11 cameras as you described. Based on my experience with the M11 Monochrom and M11-P, I not experienced a freeze, nor over exposure with either. I offer the following suggestion that might help you. I know photographers who use this procedure have resolved their freeze issue. Others report the procedure did not work for them. So here it is: First, I start with a new SD card and for me this is either Delkin Black 128 GB or San Disc Pro 128 SD cards. Second, I then run the SD card via a free app called SD Card Formatter. Third, once formatted, I then put the SD card in the M11 camera and reformat the card in camera. I shoot that SD card for the day. Fourth, Every day, I download my photographs to the computer. Then I put the SD card back in and always reformat the SD card. Fifth, after every 10 days of shooting, I reformat the SD with SD Card Formatter app and do the process are previously described. Last, I always use the same SD card in that camera. I discovered this process way back when I owned the M240. That camera would also freeze along with my M9. Since using this process, I have never had a freeze, lockup, "bricking" going back to the M240 days. Subsequent M 240, M10, M10-R and now M11s, no freezes, bricking, overexposures, etc.. If this doesn't work for you and your camera is new, you should be able to get the Leica Store to swap out the camera body with no issues. But I suggest you try this process first. It might solve your issues. r/ Mark Edited November 11, 2023 by LeicaR10 2
Photoworks Posted November 11, 2023 Share #5 Posted November 11, 2023 Are you sure it is the camera? I have been using it every day for work with no issues. I don't like the new tethering setting, but that is not a bug!
algrove Posted November 11, 2023 Share #6 Posted November 11, 2023 OP I know when it goes wrong it can go VERY wrong. I use Sandisk or Lexar SD cards and no issues, but I did have issues with the Sony Tough SD cards.Did you save your previous settings to the SD card before installing the new FW? Did it import those settings OK? Have you set up User Profiles? The smallest change I settings can force your M11 to revert to the head and shoulders profile, thus not your preferred profile. Sounds like you might have default settings and we all know how much those dod not agree with our shooting styles at times. More later.
mattcheol Posted November 11, 2023 Share #7 Posted November 11, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) The overexposure in night scenes is 100% my experience as well. I had it in both of the most recent firmwares. I was overseas when the 2.0.1 version dropped and was hopeful that it would provide a fix, but it’s just as bad, in my experience at least. Sometimes i reformat the card in camera, sometines not. Been doing this for a good ten years with all my cameras including Leica's (M8.2, M240, M11, digital CL). BTW i use mainly UHS1 and UHS2 Sandisk cards. Even UHS1 work fine in spite of Leica advising UHS2 for the M11 but you may prefer following such advice as a precaution. londond Posted November 11, 2023 Share #10 Posted November 11, 2023 Since upgrading the firmware I am struggling with freezing on both my M11 and M11M. Appreciate all the well-meant suggestions about cards and formatting, grateful that people take the trouble to offer them. However…. …I have tried all sorts of combinations of different UHS-II cards and formatting routines, no luck, Yesterday I was using the internal memory - 2 freezes in 39 shots. I am hoping the the polite and professional Leica support people can fix the problem, because card juggling won’t for me.
londond Posted November 11, 2023 Share #11 Posted November 11, 2023 Looking on the bright side, its a good job Leica got rid of the baseplate for the M11. It would be even more frustrating if you had to remove that every 20 shots to extract the battery…..
lct Posted November 11, 2023 Share #12 Posted November 11, 2023 i would not accept such a faulty camera. I would not accept a repair either, only a refund or a replacement, but i don't know if this is allowed by your legislation.
Jammy Dodger Posted November 11, 2023 Author Share #13 Posted November 11, 2023 (edited) Unfortunately this is my second M11; the first was returned in the first week with problems; this one was initially better but the new firmware is absolutely awful with it - so dissapointing as the camera itself is so nice but is just unusable at the moment. I am using good quality Sandisk SD cards and have also tried Lexar. Edited November 11, 2023 by Jammy Dodger
lexontario Posted November 11, 2023 Share #14 Posted November 11, 2023 One last kick at the can, you could try to reinstall the Firmware update, if that is possible.
la1402 Posted November 11, 2023 Share #15 Posted November 11, 2023 No freezes here without paying any attention to how I format my Sandisk Pro card. but not on 2.0.1 yet. I wonder wether I should hold off with the update.

My experience would perhaps replace the word "necessary" with "recommended". I had no issues using a UHS-I card with 2.0.1. I also have no issues using a UHS-II card. Regarding over exposure at night... yes, I found the M11 to be about 1 stop over exposed when shooting at night. My 2.0.1 night test shots included garden lights with the camera set to Highlight Weighted exposure metering. Next time I'll dial in -1 stop of exposure compensation. Jammy Dodger Posted November 11, 2023 Author Share #18 Posted November 11, 2023 Out again today..................camera worked flawlessly! Only difference was the sun was shining; looks like my M11 does not like night street photography on highlight priority metering.
M11 for me Posted November 12, 2023 Share #19 Posted November 12, 2023 vor 16 Stunden schrieb marchyman: My experience would perhaps replace the word "necessary" with "recommended". I had no issues using a UHS-I card with 2.0.1. Intersting. I still use my old SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I 64GB. I have 2 of those (a spare one in the Leica half case). I belong to the group that has no complaints with reliability of the M11 (no freezing). I hope I do not shout too loudly: Yesterday I came home with a set of images: About half the images out of about 30 were upside down in Lightroom Classic. I never had that before . . . 🥲. No big issue but a clear bug.
lct Posted November 12, 2023 Share #20 Posted November 12, 2023 No upside down images here, no freezes either, but my UHS1 Sandisk Extreme Pro cards (256gb & 64gb) seem to work fine with firmwares 2.0.1 as well as 1.6.1. Both were formatted with SD Card Formatter though.
