chester6 Posted November 5, 2023 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I usually sit my camera down on my desk, and love that small lenses allow the m11 to sit upright even without the grip. I am eyeing the 35mm Summilux FLE ii and it looks somewhere in between a compact and bulky lens. I tried searching around but didn't find much information on this topic so thought I would start a thread. Which medium sized lens will tip over? and which ones will allow the camera to sit upright? Advertisement Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 Hi chester6, Take a look here M11 balance with lens, which ones will tip forward?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
maxpower Posted November 5, 2023 Share #2 Posted November 5, 2023 I don't know if anyone made an overview of this, with the M11 series it might also depend on whether you have a black or silver body as they have a weight difference. Actually that also goes for lenses as some silver/chrome ones are made of brass and therefore heavier too (and I have no experience with other lenses like special editions or black paint etc but think those weights can also differ). Hood or no hood, filter or no filter, could probably also make a difference. So there are a lot of factors! For lenses that tip I'm used to putting the focus tab down as a "support" so it doesn't tip anymore, and for what it's worth that specific lens (35mm Summilux-M FLE II in silver/chrome) does tip with my silver/chrome M11. Yeah good point, the extra weight from brass body and lenses might make a difference for some combinations. That’s sad to hear, I have the lighter black version so it definitely will tip too 😞 I have tried the lens tab trick but it only works on very specific angles, otherwise it just tips and sits on the tab instead. hoolyproductions Posted November 5, 2023 Share #4 Posted November 5, 2023 I have the black M11 and both of the new close focus Summiluxes (35mm and 50mm). They both tip the camera to the front. The 35mm almost balances, but not quite (on my M6, which is just slightly heavier, the camera stays upright). I rotate the focus tab a little away from infinity and this keeps the camera upright when on a desk/table. My other M lens right now is a 35mm summicron ASPH II which is quite a bit more compact and does not tip the camera.
Photoworks Posted November 5, 2023 Share #5 Posted November 5, 2023 Lol, your lens choice is going to be "tip or not to tip over"?
UliWer Posted November 5, 2023 Share #6 Posted November 5, 2023 One should look for lenses with hoods to prevent them tipping over (#49 and 50 in this old thread):

charlesphoto99 Posted November 5, 2023 Share #8 Posted November 5, 2023 Buy the lenses you need (and can afford). Tipping or not tipping is tantamount to "which braided Italian leather strap is going to make my photography better?"
DrM Posted November 5, 2023 Share #9 Posted November 5, 2023 Best balance is M11 and a 35mm apo.. Oh you meant tipping over, I thought price..

Not making lens choice based on this 😅, more like should I add the $400 hand grip along with my lens order
DadDadDaddyo Posted November 5, 2023 Share #11 Posted November 5, 2023 (edited) Just use a spare body cap or lens cap and tuck it under the offending lens. In the old days I'd use use a spare cap from a film can... But really, if it isn't in use it doesn't need to be on display, either... If you move the focus tab on the bottom of the 35 Lux FLE II to the bottom of the lens, it acts as a stand that allows the camera to sit level. ymc226 Posted November 8, 2023 Share #13 Posted November 8, 2023 You could consider wrapping a very compliant neck strap around the lens to provide support underneath. This is what I do with all my Ms. I use the Artisan & Artist silk straps which are very soft, compliant and comfortable. Welcome, dear visitor!
