Which combo of 28mm & 50mm should I start out with?

I have the 50mm Summicron, v5 and the 2.8/28 ASPH v1

I am super happy with that combo across my analog and digital M.

Very good image and build quality, small, light and kind of affordable.

Even though I would love to own a Summilux or the new Summicon 28, I would probably go for the same set up again, since I need a small light set up when travelling.

Cheers

Tim

50 Summilux ASPH was a good choice. You may try others, but this one is a keeper.

As for the pairing, 28 is a natural fit.  I couldn’t gel with the 28 Summicron ASPH v1 - can’t tell you why.  If you go that route, get the v2 (it’s corrected). I have the 28 Summilux (pairs nicely with the 50) and the 28 Summaron-M (a little gem).

I wouldn’t be too bothered about size - I’m more interested in haptics and image quality.

I also just went through this question and landed on the 50 APSH Lux and the 28 Elmarit and can't imagine ever needing anything else. I thought I was a 35 shooter, but after renting the new 35 Lux a few times I never really connected with it. I did get the CV 35 Ultron if I am feeling the need for a 35 and it's truly worth all the hype.

But the 50 Lux is just an absolute grail lens and the 28 pairs so perfect with it. I'm just another in a very very long line that has come to the same conclusion. Also, I picked up both the Lux and Elmarit preowned from Leica Belluview and Leica DC and saved a ton of cash. The customer service was incredible. They both look brand new and I got the 50 for $3200 and the 28 for $1900 (no tax on preowned) and couldn't be happier.

Best of luck on your lens journey!

Since you’re in the US, you always have the option to rent and see for yourself (or demo from a cooperative dealer). As you found, the 50 Summilux ASPH (also my choice) was different in your hands than all of your readings.

Unlike many, I like a 35/50 combo, and don’t find them too close.  Personal styles and tastes…

I've just sold my 28 Elmarit ASPH and bought a 28mm Summaron. I'll be pairing the Summaron with the 50 Cron v5 I already own, with a Steel Rim Reissue sandwiched in the middle for a one-lens setup.

I'm hoping that these three lenses will cohere into a 'neo-vintage' set.

Also take a look at the 35/1.4 ASPH pre FLE. Its more in line with your 28/5.6 and 50/2 v5

What made you switch from elmarit to summicron? Have you noticed any improvements?

Ultron 28 ii (unless you do landscape vigorously the Summicron 28 asph has no surplusvalue above the CV).

The APO Lanthar is too big for my taste (if you count the hood in), so if you want APO, the Leica 50APO would be the choice. Remind though that the utter sharpness makes it not necessarily multipurpose lense. The bo-keh at 2.0 is unsurpassed as can be seen on this forum. The 1.4 in the recent remake with 45cm as closest distance to subject is relatively cheap compared to the APO and has a much broader functionality. All the 50’s from Leica, including the Elmar-M 2.8 collapsible, start to perform equally well at ~ 4.0 already, which has been demonstrated at this forum.

It's too early for me to say if the switch was a good idea, but I did for three reasons: (1) I liked the rendering I saw from the Summaron in others' images; (2) I wanted to try shooting with a 28mm lens that would force me to compose with deep depth of field; (3) I've transitioned from the 35 FLE to the 35 Steel Rim as my main 35mm lens, and wanted to try something with a softer rendering. I may very well switch back after trying the Summaron, but I have high hopes that it will fit nicely into my kit!

I have the Voigtlanders:

Nokton 50mm 1.5 II MC and Color-Skopar 28mm 2.8 II.

Tiny combo with fantastic image quality, I don't need anything more.

I shoot professionally weddings, documentary and street (teaching as well) with this combo exclusively.

Don't discount Voigtlander because it's not aa Leica lens, Cosina is hitting it out of the park lately!

And the 50 is so small I can't think of wanting the Summilux ASPH: too big and heavy! And the Summicron 50mm, although a great size as well, simply doesn't have the smooth bokeh when needed.

This is the Nokton 50mm at F2: the Summicron would not have been so smooth.

I have nothing but smooth bokeh pics at f/2 with both v4 and v5 Summicrons so far. Could you show some harsh or busy bokey at f/2 with the Summicron by chance? Just curious as i'm interested in the Nokton and the bokeh of the Summilux asph (not Summicron) is too harsh around f/2.8 to my taste.

Hi lct,

here is one where I found the Summicron to produce a distracting baackground: when I shot this I wanted as much as possible to blur the tree away to separate the subjects a bit more, but the bokeh outlining makes it a lot more distracting than it should be. The Nokton 50mm 1.5 II or the 50mm Summilux ASPH would have done a better job here, and I want to have that smoothness when I have such a difficult background.

Look also at the outlining on the upper left corner, on the white beam of the structure, and on the right upper corner, same structure, on the specular highlight. They are less imprtant maybe, but they show that outlining on the Summicron (this was version 5).

After a 20 something journey with Ms and many different iterations that included 21mms, 90mms, Noctilux, MATE, I have ended up using only two lenses on my M:

28mm asph f2 v1

50mm asph f1.4 v1

so I think you have hit on the absolutely right combination, the sweet spot for M cameras. Or a single 35mm.

The only upgrade I would consider is to the v2 28 mm , if only because of the lens hood and the propensity of the v1 to come loose at the barrel, if you do not handle it correctly.

Thank you @Harpomatic. I believe this is what i (and others?) call optical bokeh where OOF details are not sharp but can be identified, vs gaussian bokeh where details are too blurred to be identified. This is a subjective matter obviously but gaussian bokeh is not my cup of tea personally. Couple of Summicron v4 snaps below to show what i mean .Thank you again anyway 🙂

If it’s any help, here’s one using the Summicron V5 at f2

Any 50cron version would have done a better job with the background.
