Basically, there are two meeting points, one at Saturday noon to declare the equipment and one in the evening for the dinner. The rest is self-organized although I frequently bump into the others on the other days.

For the competition, some move in groups, some of their own, some obvious places attract groups, there were challenges where I didn't meet anyone during the two hours, there were others where I met the others all the time. In my view the best is to keep an open mind and react to what is coming.

Last year was a bit unusual with the attractive part of Dubrovnik being so compact. And there being at least three weddings taking place on the Saturday afternoon. And with Croatians having such a great time in the street between church and reception venues.

Nice will be different from that I’m sure.

Last year in Dubrovnik was super nice, but for my taste there is too much emphasis on the competition. I will travel to Nice to meet people but will most likely skip the competition.

The clue is in the title….

Anyone is free to organise a purely social meeting anytime but the challenge weekend is a fun competition as well as a social.

Once the challenge starts after the lunch meeting it’s up to the individual to decide what to do, you could take just one shot and it could be the winner!

I challenge myself to make a photo that represents the place I am in.

Meeting people is the best part.

I totally agree with your second and third paragraph. As to the opening one, that’s the premise I start with, but invariably I deviate from this path of truth and in the end choose what I perceive to be my “best” picture, whatever that may mean… 🤔

That’s exactly what I do. I see it as part of “the point” but it’s a personal thing, not a rule.

In my impression it is up to every participant how competitive the participation in the challenge is handled. My personal ambition is to hand in a picture which is worth showing, so in the end I'm competing mainly against myself. Typically, the professionals are tough competition since they are much more consistent in turning available opportunities into good images, but if John (erl) won't come, there will be already one strong competitor less.

Also, every challenge is different, Wetzlar was my personal disaster while I had ten usable pictures after ten minutes in Istanbul. In any case, it is an excellent photographic exercise, having several limitations, I have the feeling I start to recognize images I might have missed normally.

Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels or Air B&B (VRBO) locations in Nice? Would be good to be near friendly faces to plan meeting for breakfast or beers (or both, let us not be judgemental).

My First Lady and me will stay at an Appartment in the Old Town, close to Rue Centrale / Entrance to Vieux Nice. Personally I have not stayed in this area of Nice yet, so we will find out.

Train would be my preferred route, but it takes about 11 hours and a minimum of 2 changes, so not going to happen.

Next option was to drive and pop in to see a fellow member on my way there, but that is a 9 hour drive, so not much fun.

In the end, I found Sleezyjet goes there direct and for only CHF68 return (although finding the button that allows login to use EasyJet Plus reduction was very well hidden).

I shall arrive Thursday at noon and leave Monday at 0830.

Looking forward to see the regulars and new comers for a beer on Thu and Fri evening and the hangers on for dinner and drinks on Sunday.

Maybe in-between, take some photos.

I am in touch with a restaurant that would be probably quite suitable to accomodate our crowd; it is too early, of course to book, but I guess they need to be prepared for vegan as well as carnivorous guests...

Would you like me to pursue the matter? If yes, I'll welcome all advice.
