Very strange. This is either a user error or some issues with your lens. Sigma would never offer a lens with so poor performance. If the problem is your copy, Sigma quality control has not had a good day at work.

Then it must be a special user problem with Sigma  :) - and it was over 4-5 days - never had such a long hang-over :)

Yes, I sent it back to the dealer. It could be a problem with the "old" AF-System of the 601 and the new lens motors. Sometimes the lens was "puming". The only thing what could happen is that when pressing the trigger and holding the lens at the focal length ring you could come with your palm to the focus ring. - but why only at 200mm? That could be the only user error ... and as I said before the lens is not well balanced holding it at focal ring. The best balance is near the focus ring. If this is so, then it is a sort of construction error to change the rings. That has Panasonic made better ... also with the boring sound ... but as a user confirmed in the german forum that sound is normal. Poor for Viedomaker ...

200mm is not an ideal focal length for astrophotography, but I tried it anyway with my new Sigma 70-200. The first of the two pictures shows Jupiter with its four Galilean moons, Callisto, Jupiter, Io, Europa and Ganymede (left to right). It's a heavy crop, but I like it. The second shows Orion nebula, 1350 light years away, practically in our direct neighborhood. No pictures for astrophysical research, but not bad to show, what you can achieve with your own amateur equipment.

I recently shot my 90-280, the Pana 70200/4.0 and a Sigma 135/1.8 at comparable focal length and f-stop.

What I realized, while the 90280 is not the fastest lens, it had the most accurate focus of the 3 in this small test.

What I am interested in is not only AF-speed (where the 70200/2.8 Sigma seems to shine), but also how many (percent) images will you get where AF is slightly off.

I remember from other camera brands bodys, that AF accurancy can be one area, where third party lenses might have some disadvantages.

I would love to check out a Pana 70200/2.8 and a Sigma 70200/2.8 in direct comparison before deciding for either, and I would love to cpmpare it to my 90280.

The 90-280 will win as the best in absolute quality, the Sigma as very close, much faster and superior AF in both speed and accuracy, and the Panasonic as a strong third. Overall winner: The Sigma by a fair margin. One of the best lenses I ever owned.

I don't know, I used 3 70-200mm f2.8 from Panasonic and I also tried the 70-200mm DG DN. Two of the 70-200mm S Pro I used were sharper at 200mm wide open. I also prefer the overall rendering of the S Pro to the DG DN.
In fact I never seen a 70-200mm this sharp at 200mm than the S Pro and I would be really surprised if the 90-280mm is at least as sharp wide open. I kept the sharpest 70-200mm S Pro (at 200mm), however below 100mm, it is really not as sharp as the DG DN.

The Leica’s advantage isn’t sharpness, It’s that it’s an APO lens. Mostly you won’t see much difference but very very occasionally when the others show fringing of CA the APO will show much less or none. I have the new Sigma, the Panny f4, both Canon’s, both Sony’s and the 90-280. Mostly they’re all great. Of MY lenses the Sigma is the sharpest at 200mm, just, followed by the 2.8 Canon and the rest. My Panny f4 is the weakest, just. None are not sharp. The 90-280 bests them all in CA control, easily.

It’s also longer and spectacularly weather sealed. I’ve literally rinsed it off with a hose.

The best AF is on the Sony’s. Canon is fast but less accurate. Leica is accurate but less fast. The Sigma is very fast AF on my SL3. Even AFC is fine, just the EVF resolution drop but the AF works great.

That is an interesting and apposite comment.

Thank you .

I`m off to trade my Pany F4 in tomorrow.

I`m not sure what I`ll replace it with (or even if  I`ll replace it because I cover fewer equestrian events these days than I once did ) but that is a useful comment should I do so.

One of the thingsI miss in this discussion is the colour rendering of the lens which for my taste is optimal. Notice the sharpness and soft bokeh as well. SL601.

so i just got the Sigma 70-200 and while it is sharp and the AF is fast, i am still not sure about the falloff / Bokeh of the lens.

May send it back and get the 90-280, but i will test it some more this weekend.

What is the problem? It is smooth and it draws favourable reviews, the only minus is that it has some cats-eye in Bokeh Balls. The 90-280 is a different beast - ultimate IQ, but heavy and slow (not too good for subject separation at the short end, like portraits,  2.8 does better)
