This lens been rumoured for so long it's painful, (August 2020) I've been waiting with eager anticipation for today's announcement thinking it was finally here but no, its the Sigma 10-18 DC DN, yet another wide angle option for L mount with Sigma saying the 70-200 is in development (still) expected now December.  We'll see.

What are 3 years rumor? Think about the 21mm Leica SL - the good thing is, they write on their websites that is Dez. 2023 and not only Dezember :) But nothing to hear about price and weight but the Sigma C/O had a copy in his hands - hopefully it's not only a mockup.

Now we have to wait a year or two to get it in the Wetzlar - Version :)

I must have missed that - watched the entire presentation and only saw the 10-18.. can you point me in the direction of that bit please?  The images I have seen look just like the current Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 DG OS HSM Sport Lens EF mount etc and I thought they were looking to design a lighter/shorter version. I have no interest in another almost 2kgs 70-200 when we have Canons RF at a little over 1kg.

Look at the links in the pots above. The new one has no meter-scale and has an aperture scale like the DG DN. And in the presentation it is near to the end.

Thanks for that.. just seen in in the French presentation and also noticed details on weight and size... a little heavier than I'd hoped and nearer the Panasonic than the Canon RF but welcome anyway and look forward to it's eventual arrival.

That looks not so bad. The filter is smaller than expected and the weight looks not so bad. The old one has 1805g and the Panasonic 1570g - and it's between the level from  the 100-400 from Leica vs. Sigma. The length is nearly the same as the 100-400 or the Panasonic.

mmm

the panny f4 is under 1kg though tbf the f2.8 is over 1.5kg

difficult

I'll stick with the 70-300 for now but using a tele with either could be useful jbut I really don't need that reach often enough really

I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to this or not. On one hand, a native 70-200/2.8 that costs less than the Panasonic model is going to be useful to get that f2.8 look, and in darker situations. On the other, it looks like a pretty large and heavy lens, which hinders how useful it's going to be in some situations, like airplane travel. I may be better off getting the Panasonic f4 version after all.

70-210s and 80-200s used to be the obligatory tele-zoom lens in the film era, but I would much rather carry a fixed lens. These generally lighter, faster, and higher quality. A zoom makes sense if you are a professional, and you don't want to crop thousands of images after a long day's work, but I really don't mind tweaking one or two keepers if it means carrying less weight.

My sentiments exactly... Do we know if Sigma will release an f4 version?

What I really want from Sigma is a compact, high quality 24-105 or 24-120 f4 in native L mount. This would be my bread and butter lens for doc work and travel. As it is, I'm using the very heavy Sigma 24-105 with MC21, which produces decent images but is problematic with its weight and subpar autofocus. The Panasonic 24-105 is considerably lighter and smaller than that combination, but finding decently priced secondhand copies isn't easy, and then there is the issue with lens element bubbling in many Panasonic lenses.

The preproduction reviews are coming out now, and it appears to compare very favourably with the Sony G Master equivalent for a lot less money. Interestingly, it is almost parfocal, so if you focus at 70mm and then zoom in to 200mm, it is almost in focus. This will be a big benefit for video shooters who might want to zoom in or out while retaining focus. The image quality seems to be about on par with the G Master, with no chromatic aberration to speak of, very sharp images, pleasant bokeh and minimal vignetting wide open. Autofocus also appears to be very fast and accurate.

Few disappointments for me.  It's a bit of a lump still given the Sony and Canon versions, not sure what they were thinking with the hood, there are times I choose to reverse the hood while shooting, won't be possible on this lens given it will cover the zoom ring, and removing the tripod foot is a tooled up job!  Watched numerous YouTubers yesterday, not managed to find one yet of it in use on a Panasonic S52, the only L mount with PDAF, Mr Tonelli didn't sound too impressed with AF performance on his SL2s.  Having said all that I will probably still want to try one for myself, and I'm glad to hear it will work with the TC's😉

The fp-L is the other L-mount camera with PDAF.

Maybe Kay Wong ("Kai W" on YT) or Lok Cheung ("TheLokCheung") will review it. I think they both use the S5ii.
