Hello!

A few months back I was lucky to acquire a Leica MD 262 in the USA.

The Zeiss Planar 50mm lens was sold separately.

It was sold with a red leather body…!

Hello, Anthony, and welcome to the Forum.

Congratulations on your acquisition! Not only are they relatively difficult to find the example you show here seems to be in particularly fine cosmetic condition. The red leather re-skin is also of interest as there are not that many (AFAIK) aftermarket brands which offer replacement leather for the M-D Typ-262 it being a very low-volume offering even here in 'Leica-World'.

I trust you will have fun here in the Forum and wish you the best of good fortune with your photographic forays.

Philip.

EDIT : Please get rid of those split-rings ASAP and get a bog-standard Leica 14312 strap. It's low-cost, superb in use and your camera deserves it.

The previous owner, I was told, had a CLA done by Leica in Germany or the UK and wanted a red body.  Leica was the one who put it on.

I called the Leica headquarters in New Jersey and gave me that information.

Yes, those split rings were never used and purchased a vintage Leica strap on eBay...!

👍

the best strap,

nylon is souple and durable.

Anti-Slip pad is ...  also the best 👍.

+1

Try to ignore all the “which strap” threads on here…

I have this strap on all my Ms (well the ones that have strap lugs 😉) replacing the specific-model-supplied leather straps if applicable.

Easy to wind round the wrist as a hand strap, easy on/off and take no space in a bag.

This might bd a self-installed skin. You can google many sources. A genuine leather skin usually costs around $30. many colors to choose. It's easy to install.

The risk of self-installed skin is loosing Leica's waranttee.

That is no risk unless their policy has changed drastically over the last few years - Leica has always extended warranty on my self-installed skin cameras to the extent of replacing it by a-la-carte leather after the repair at a greatly reduced price.

It is certainly a self-installed skin, Leica manages just that little extra of precision with their a-la-carte leather especially not showing the edges. This looks like a Cameraleather cover. Unfortunately the company appears to be dormant.

Good to know it. It is just attempting to replace the skin of desired patterns.

Just to compare: this is Leica-installed leather on my M9M

I have dealt with this one, Very nice.

The web page is no very helpful, but email response is very very good.

2: https://hugostudio.com

This is about the same price and quality as the above cameraleather, but it seems much more choices.

Pay attention to the thickness (as jaap warned), you can choose 0.3~04mm, 0.4~0.5mm, or 0.5~0.6mm. Ask the thickness for your camefra model.

no expereience with this one, buy it seem the material is paper, not leather.

4: http://aki-asahi.com/store/

This only shows M240 ( and film Leica), but I suspect they can do other digital M, just email for details.

This one is super expensive compaed to cameraleather.com, but the quality is about hte same.

They also show skins for M8 / M9 (immediately above the M240 listing) but looking at the options it seems that, nowadays, they only offer a choice of four colours - Black; Blue; Navy Blue and Red for these cameras.

A few years ago I bought a set from them to re-skin my M Monochrom and at that time I could choose from the same colour options as for the M3 (etc.) cameras which comprised Black; Blue; Navy Blue; Red; Camel; Deep Pink; Light Green and Ochre.

The quality of cut and finish is superb. I'd recommend them most heartily. FWIW I was a Dull Boy and chose Black...

Philip.
