I’m planning a trip to Tokyo, Kyoto, Singapore and Bangkok in July with the family. I’m taking a Q3 and SL2S with 35mm and 75mm APO Summicron SL lenses. I’m also taking a 50mm f2 Sigma DG DN as a light weight walk-around lens.

Erik

The Q3 cropped to 35mm has a resolution of 38mpx.  Cut the weight and leave the 35mm APO at home 🙂

The problem is that it’s still a 28mm focal length cropped rather than native 35mm. I also like redundancy in case of failure. It would suck if the Q3 failed on the trip and I just had the 50/75mm focal lengths.

@jaapv has answered this a million times.  And what if the SL2S fails, then you only have the Q3 and one lens.  Calamity.  Life is full of 'what ifs' that never happen.  Anyway, plenty of camera stores where you're going so just go buy another camera and enjoy the trip.

Sounds like a fun trip and I like your kit. Have a great time.

It's a very individual thing how much people are willing to carry, as has been pointed out. After going around in circles with this for a while I've settled on my SL2-S and 24-90mm for more photo-centric trips. I'm in the middle of a two week trip in Scotland and it has been absolutely stellar, handling everything.

I tried a Q2 for a good while last year and whilst I loved it I shoot a lot of landscape stuff at 90mm and it felt like too much of a compromise.

When I need/want to travel lighter I now have a Leica M again (replacing the Q2), which I mostly just use with a 50mm (and a 28mm 2.8 in case I want to go wider). I much prefer the SL2-S though so I am not sure how long I will keep the M.

By the way I just came back from a work trip to Bangkok. I took my SL2-S for my free days and my M11 for the working days but in the end I pretty much only used the M11 - between the heat, chaos of Bangkok and the jet lag from a short trip, I did not feel like lugging a heavy camera around and hardly used the SL2-S. If I'd been there on holiday it would probably have been the other way around.
