It does everything but ‘magic’ or low light or shallow DOF, for that I occasionally swap to Lux or Noct.

F4 as the widest aperture? I never had a wish for that, not for the price involved either.

Whats wrong with F4 for with zone focussing ? Or landscapes ? I have the Luxes, too, but on my last photo walk with friends through NYC I saw a lot of guys shooting their 28’s at F8 all day….

I sold my second MATE through a reputable Leica dealer, and the first buyer returned it within the store return policy window due to unpredictable flare at 50mm, requiring the dealer to better disclose the characteristic and to sell it a second time.

It’s interesting that the MATE seems to be a bit controversial here. Kinda all over the map in terms of satisfaction, sharpness etc. Is it copy deviation ? Or expectation deviation ?

How about a 50/75 Bi-focal? No need to worry about framelines, it probably wouldn't have to be huge even if it was fast, and you'd have an interesting combination of focal lengths. Extra points if they can make it close focus too.

I’d be in ! Although for my needs I’d settle on a 28+50 Bi-Elmarit kinda 50Lux sized and priced. Punch in 1.3x for 35 and 75mm at 40MP resolution on M11’s. That’d be what I’d settle for. Take my money for that, Leica !

Certainly some copy variation, based on my experience. Can’t speak to others’ expectations.  I got what I anticipated; sale wasn’t result of lens performance.

I had mine (latest second version) CLA'ed and 6-bit coded by Leica and am very satisfied with the pictures.  Compared to my other lenses, a 50 Apo Summicron and 28 Elmarit ASPH II, I don't hesitate to use it at all in any situation.  I do have the hood for it, keep it on all the time.

Wow, mine is obliterated by my VL 50 Apo. I am very encouraged and will arrange for a CLA. Guess that’ll take months, but I will report the results here.

That's a good question. I'm planning to get mine (the second version) sent back to Wetzlar for checking. Some folks who have done this report that their lens came back significantly improved, but others report that it made no difference.

I decided to give it a CLA shot. Wanna add 6bit coding anyway, and some lubrication won't hurt after 25 years. Might as well have the optics checked there.

The 50mm MATE is not as good as my 50mm APO Summicron on my M10R.  But for a walk-about travel lens used at f8 for depth of field and where it is sharp out to the corners, I can get very nice pictures.  When I need something faster or want that resolution, the APO comes out of my pocket.

Again, my MATE is the second version that was reportedly again improved (third version?), recently CLA'ed and used always with the Leica lens shade.

I might be interested in an f2.8 28/50 re-do of the lens (a "Dual-Elmarit?)  I am trying out the 28 Elmarit for both 28mm & 35mm framed shots, a'la the Q.  The difference in framing is not much, still experimenting!

With my M11 and M11M I stopped using 35mm lenses. I use my 28 Elmarit for 28 (60mpx) and 35 (40mpx) and my 50lux for 50 (60mpx) and 75mm (40mpx). And yes, I understand the implications in DOF, compression etc., but I feel I can totally live with it. A 28/50 Dual Elmarit would probably change my 2 lens kit into this one  plus a 35 lux.

While waiting (this might take some time) I just use happily the MATE I have.

Good surprises came when I travel "light" and monochrom pictures have "something else" pleasingly great.

Even 50mm setting has no flare when I know how to avoid it, changing my position in accordance.

I envy you. The sun was far from the frame there so flare was not expected normally. Reason why i don't use the MATE in RF mode any more. In LV mode, flare is easily visible with the EVF.

Very interesting topic!

I do not think Zoom Lens on M is a good idea, this will change the DNA and most of us will shift to Hasselblad :) (it is a NO from the users)

I do think 28-50  is a fantastic idea. But from the business point of view, Leica should not let this happen. (NO from Leica)

Therefore, I have a cunning idea

: A bi-elmarit  2,8/(28,70), then leave 35 and 50 along.

What do you think? Brilliant, isn't it?

No frame lines for 70mm, so not so brilliant for me as an RF-only user. I’d vote for going in the opposite direction, as already mentioned: a 35/50 bi-Elmar or bi-Elmarit. These are my most used focal lengths. Having multiple, simultaneously produced, 35 and 50mm M lenses has hardly seemed to hinder sales.  Many here own multiple versions of one or both.

BTW, the WATE already incorporates a zoom design. And the OP introduced the idea of a 24-70 in the first post.

You mean 28-75 perhaps. It would be a bigger lens as an f/2.8 Elmarit i fear and i would miss the 35 and 50mm focal lengths personally. YMMV.
