I think its a nice idea but for it to be useful to M users it would have to be a preset plug in for Lightroom/capture one so we can apply it to our DNG workflow

Would that mean jpg output?

On the Fujifilms, at least, their simulations are all one or another form of jpg output.

Maybe for *#@nstagram, but not for my printing, thanks!

If Leica provides the looks in the form of some LR/C1 profiles or presets, they can be applied to DNG files as well. I doubt they will, though.

in reality, it is just a preset. I think it would be interesting to get it with exposure simulation in the camera.

Just like they had them for the Cinema edition of M10-p

Last year I was sitting in on a meeting for Leica to develop more tools for mobile. I like where they are going. I just wish the connection would be open to other app developers. There is some cool stuff out there.

I'm confused, isn't the look already Leica?

I shoot DNG only, so I don't really mind. I just use Priime Lightroom Presets, and sometimes I export and apply the preset during export and it's pretty much done.

I guess they are the looks from the film era ..

  • 1 year later...

I'm a new M11-P owner, and I've gotta say, I'm a bit irked that the Leica looks aren't available for my camera.

I understand they're not for everyone - that's fine (Each to their own!). It just feels like the M cameras are the flagship, and the flagship doesn't get access to the new fun thing? It leaves a bit of a sour taste for me.

I know it's unlikely, but I wonder if Leica will ever make these available to the M11 via firmware update.

Welcome to the Forum.

Two questions if I may. 1.What do you understand as the 'Leica looks'? 2. Did you not establish what features a £8k camera had before purchase, especially those that would 'irk' you if not there?

A bit harsh on a new member. Welcome Mattro.

We spend quite a lot of time discussing colour balance, SOOC files, etc. I can see no reason why having Leica Looks is a negative. The OP didn't ask for feedback about his purchasing procedure, he asked what the forum felt about whether they would be helpful or ever available. To have the ability to have different colour balance SOOC files would clearly be of interest to some. I've used this occasionally on other platforms when wanting to have SoMe ready files.

Personally I'm not fussed.

I don't know the reason they aren't already included but there is certainly an innate tendency to 'photographic snobbishness' and 'radical photographic conservatism' among M body owners! I therefore think unlikely as there are plenty of other issues for Leica to work on.

On the Fuji X100V they apply to jpegs, but all the simulations are also in Lightroom - provided it was shot on a camera supporting them - so you can jump straight to a very similar look on your Raw files.  It's a really useful feature, and doesn't in any way 'get in the way' if you don't want it.

Yes good question @mattro and welcome to the forum. It's just that Leica are so proud of their so-called "Leica look" (nobody can define BTW) that the idea of several Leica looks sounds somewhat unlikely.

This may have passed you by. Leica Looks (two capital Ls) are multiple and well defined. The Leica look is not.

The M is not about fun things. It is meant to present photography pure and to enable the users to express their photographic vision fully without the tool getting in the way. Although I admit that Leica  is compromising on that philosophy with the M11,  probably is forced to do so for competitive reasons.
I would not call the M Leica’s flagship, both the Q and the SL are a flagship in their own class of camera as well.
