Hi,

Can someone please clarify this for me.

A spring top film spool will only work in a iiig whereas a iiif has a fixed top film spool only.

I have just purchased a iiif and had a lot of trouble trying to load the film and then I wasn't sure if the iiif should have a fixed top spool, this iiif has a spring top spool?

Thank you

I have a spring loaded spool in my IIIf. The loading of film into a IIIf is hairy. I have the IIIf almost during my lifetime and it was and is a time-consuming action still. Well time-consuming is not the right word. I have to be careful.

I too have had barnacks for quite a while, yet they are the only cameras I mis-load from time to time - even though I try to be extra careful.

Screwmount Leicas prior to the III/Ig originally had a rigid spool (SPULM)(1931-53) with a back-compatible spring loaded version SVOOP (14021) introduced in 1954.

I have a Canon spring loaded spool in my III (Model F) - makes it much easier to remove the spool

The Ig/IIIg share the same spring loaded spool, SPOOM (14022)(1955) as the M's (M1, M2, M3 & MD)
