Black and White Profile Disappears in Lightroom

Hello all,

I shoot DNG nearly exclusively. I noticed that when I bring the files shot with the internal M11 Monochrome profile, that once imported into Lightroom, they are no longer black and white. The M11 profiles do not seem to be available in Lightroom.

Has anyone solved this?

This cannot be solved as the internal B&W rendering of the camera is JPG only. The DNG will always retain full colour information. If you want a B&W image in LR from DNG you must utilize the conversion tools of LR. Otherwise use the JPG. ( not recommended) 

FYI: DNG is not an image format but a raw format.

I have done some tests some time ago of the BW editing compared to the JGP BW from the camera.

In capture one pro you turn the BW function on and it looks exactly the same. Nothing special.

You may want to try that.

LrC can get to the same look in post with some adjustments.

Most of the time I like the BW option that the preset give me as a starting point.

MastinLabs and RNI do a good job in both programs. Tri-X and Agfa scala are my favorites.

Do not have access to a DNG shot in B&W to check. Lightroom has a preference where you specify whether the camera’s values, or Adobe’s values should be used at import.

Does anyone have the LR recipe for getting the internal JPG look from the DNG? I shot DNG with BW enabled and like the JPG results, but want to use the DNG to get the full flexibility wrt color filters etc..

Lightroom does offer the option to do it yourself and save it to a preset.

just put the JPG next to DNG and start editing

If you set the gradation curve from linear to medium contrast and then select the Adobe Monochrome profile, you are already pretty close to the Leica JPG.

Save the whole thing as a preset and apply it when improvising, then it fits reasonably well and you don't see the colored version at all.

Leica will have a fix for this most likely coming soon. Of course it will cost you $9K plus....

Thanks everyone for the comments and info. I think I’m responding to the fact that if I shoot RAW on my R5, but I’ve shot with a monochrome setting in-camera, then it will remain that way once imported into Lightroom. I was hoping for something similar with Leica. 

This also means that if I use multiple color profiles in-camera, when I import them, they maintain the profile with which they were shot. It’s a great feature in terms of convenience. Not Leica’s specialty.   

I will re-check my Lightroom settings to see if it is honoring the camera color profile on import, or converting to Adobe.
