Since my Easter plans with the family fell through due to the covid infection, I used the time to visit a lost place today. Took the Panchro along. 50mm isn't really the perfect lens for this kind of thing, but I got some nice shot nonetheless.

Tried the Panchro at an event this weekend. The longer shots wide open didn't really work out, details get to blurry. There was some really complicated lighting and that didn't go well with the Panchro. But at portrait distance, the effect is really nice and fits well with the theme of an aethereal dancer.

Currently waiting for a black one, but there's also this coming. Dang.

Well, love this look so had to break down and order one as well from Popflash. I mostly shoot older Leica glass now days, DR Summicron, 50mm Elmar, 50mm Summarit, 35mm Summaron and a 21mm Super Angulon. I like the look of these older lenses and feel this will be a fun addition to the collection of users.

I believe the first batch of the silver Speed Panchros are arriving/arrived at Popflash this week as they sent me a notice expecting that they would start shipping to the early pre-order buyers starting tomorrow.

I received a similar notice. Fingers crossed.

I'm interested in the LLL SPII lens for video use (on a mirrorless S35 camera). I know they've said they're working on a cine lens housing variant for it. When I emailed them, they said in response to the question of when the cine version would release that they're still in the design phase, so it won't be until later this year at the earliest. But does anyone know how the first release handles focus shift / focus breathing? This would be the perfect look for a project I'm shooting this spring/summer and I'd grab one if the shift isn't too jarring.

Has anyone tried the lens and noted this detail or seen reference to this anywhere?

Thanks,

There is some focus breathing, hope the images below will help assessing it. Although I am no videographer of any sort, I don't think this focus breathing is "wild"....

As for focus shift, unless I have done it wrong, I don't see any. See above.

Edit: not sure why my photos don't show up. I'll try a bit later. But there is no focus shift on my lens, as far as I can see.

Thanks for the references catacore! This is super helpful. Does that reference demonstrate the full range from near to infinity? If so, it doesn't seem too bad..

From what I understand, good to great modern cine lenses will have just about no breathing or maybe just a little. This looks like not the best, definitely noticeable, but yeah, it doesn't seem wild at all compared to some intense ones I've seen before. This is about the same as my contax zeiss lenses that I'm using for video currently, but still quite a bit compared to the Zeiss mkI superspeeds I've used for 16mm film.
The shots I really need it for are probably only about half of the focus range so this might be manageable.

Thanks again for the post!

Try again some pictures at f5.6 and f8 focusing using the OVF, handheld, on that little coin stuck in-between the tiles.

Yes, it is the full range. First picture is shot at MFD of 0.7m and the second one focused at infinity. The pictures' name is self-descriptive, but it is not shown for some reason.

It's actually quite bad in my eyes, at least for the video. If used for photo only I wouldn't care much unless I was into stacking the photos.

@RunNP if you were used to Super Speeds back in the day you may want to have a look at Leica R primes. I sold my set of Super Speeds and shoot now all my video stuff on SL2-S and R Primes with out regrets - on the contrary.

I find 35mm for FF, as 25mm is for S-35mm, the base focal length. The 35 Summicron R second gen is a superb cine lens. So is the 50mm Summilux R first gen, but renders very differently until f 2.8. From f 2.8 onwards they match nicely.
