I thought we could share some tips and tricks about editing. Here's how I deal with white balance in LR.Ā I've created a set of presets so that I can easily preview these by hovering, and compare them.

WB As Shot

I always shoot with AWB, so the first preset is the camera's AWB. I usually find it very good.

WB Auto

This is LR’s AWB. I usually find these colors lifeless and dull, so I rarely choose this.

WB Custom 1

I often take a reference shot with an ExpoDisc or a WhiBal white balance card. I assign these white balance values here.

WB Custom 2

This is for the cases where I take pictures in various lights. Then I take another reference shot and assign for example measured sunlight in Custom 1 and measured shadow in Custom 2.

WB M10 Daylight

The camera's white balance values for daylight are not the same as LR's. I prefer the camera's values (I found them by taking a photo with the camera set to Daylight and copied these values into the preset). You can of course try the same with a different camera model.

---

I know that many people prefer to shoot with a fixed WB setting, e.g. daylight, to get a consistent white balance when importing. The disadvantage of this, I think, is that you then miss out on the extra choice this provides in post. You never get to know what the camera was ā€œthinkingā€ about the white balance at the moment of shooting. If you want a consistent white balance when importing, just have WB Daylight as part of your import preset,Ā but the camera's suggestions will still be available under As Shot.

M10M, 28mm Summicron ISO 160.Ā  I've also worked this up so it has less contrast, but this is to show the malleability of the M10M files.

Here is a very simple editing tip that I use a lot.Ā I noticed that what I'm essentially doing is setting exposure, plus white and black point. LR does all this automatically with Auto Tone, but I don't usually like the use of Highlights and Shadows, as this often gives an artificial HDR look. But by creating two simple presets, one for Auto Tone and one that resets Highlights and Shadows, I have a very good starting point with just two clicks.

Excellent. That is what I always do as well. How did you do that preset? I LRc I presume.

Yes, LR Classic.Ā For the Highlights and Shadows preset, just make sure they are set to ā€œ0ā€ before opening the New Preset dialog.

In photoshop you can create a curve layer & set the auto options to do thisĀ

Thanks for the tip. I personally only use LR Classic, but I'm sure there are easier ways to do things in other programs.

Why I never use Auto Tone

I took this picture and this is what I saw with my eyes. The only settings I've done in LR is setting white- and black point.

This is what LR's Auto Tone wants it to look like. The Shadow and Highlights makes the image look like HDR. You see more details, especially in the shadows, but it doesn't look like what I saw in real life.
