It appears to be, in that when I remove the lens the shutter curtain is not covering the sensor.

For normal operation, the shutter should be closed if you remove the lens. So, I guess "Sensor-cleaning" is activated.

Sensor cleaning is a temporary function of the camera. It would not sustain after the battery has been removed and replaced. I suspect the problem here is something more serious.

One last thing, plug in battery, plug in usb with power, turn on (I know nothing will happen), pop out battery with power on and usb still connected, turn off, replace battery, switch on and hope.

How old is the M11? To be truthful it sounds like it’s properly died.

TBF I’ve had dead Canon’s and Fuji’s too. The difference will be in how long it takes to be photographing again. That’s the true unacceptability to my mind. Stuff happens but it must be made right in a timely way. If they cannot service fast enough they should be providing loaners, or new camera and refurb old and resell yours as factory refurb like many other manufacturers do eg apple. Much less of a hit to reputation than an £8k camera that is missing for 6 months.

Little update. My camera was on its way to Germany via Leica London. Leica London checked it before sending. It was fully functional. It’s been returned to me and it’s now working again. Not sure how and why but it’s little mini break to London seems to have done the trick.

Good news!  Hope it stays all good .

Did Leica experience the 'fault' when you first sent it in, or have they just looked at it and found it to be fine?

They have technicians on site too and might have done something, who knows..

I'm sorry to say, but many of the digital Leica owners are going through denial after paying over 9K for a camera that has so many freeze issues.

Having to take the battery in and out is not a good solution.

Leica built their reputation on film cameras.. Their digital technology has some catching up to do.

This is to some extent true. If my M11 had all the issues that many are mentioning here, I would have given up on the brand. But not all M11s are having issues, and yes, buying a used one without a guarantee is risky since many people lie about whether or not it has issues. This will kill the M11's resale value.

After the latest firmware upgrade, my M11 has been as stable as any other camera, or more, and has not had any issues. Before the firmware upgrade, it would rarely freeze. Now it is working as expected. I could not be happier with it.

All high end car manufacturers went through the same.  But if one gets a high end car without issues, or a high end Leica without issues, it is magnificent.

High-end Leica? What's a high-end Leica? Or do you mean a luxury gadget? Other brands' high-end models don't have these issues, cause they are tools, not luxury items.. imagine the Nikon Z9 or Sony a1 coming out with these issues...

Perhaps Wetzar (initially) punched above its weight with the M11, that is, software-wise.

I'm also a bit puzzled by Leica's strong results, even with this troubled M11, which I guess is this company's cash cow.
