Hope i didn't miss one or several steps but apparently:
• Freezes when File Format is set to “DNG+JPG" and Storage Management to "SD” only.
• Doesn't freeze when File Format is set to "DNG" only and Storage Management to "IN=SD".

Interesting, were your A/B cards the same brand/size/capacity? Mine were same brand/speed but different capacities.

I sent a copy of your instructions to the person at Leica I have been speaking with about these issues back and forth for a very long time. I have no doubt it will get forwarded to the right team.

I did this already.

OK.  I'm curious.  I have two cards of the same size and time to spare.  Let's see.

1. Storage mode changed
2. Don't need to back anything up
3. A formatted in camera. Image taken.  Card removed from camera (after powering camera off)
4. B formatted in camera.  B removed (after powering camera off)
5. Card A inserted.  Picture taken.
6. camera switched off.  As you said: freeze.

This is the only freeze I've seen in my camera since purchase.  Of minor interest is that after popping the battery to clear the freeze the card reports no valid images.  Now I'll use SD Formatter to do an overwrite format on both cards and hopefully won't see a freeze again as the above machinations are nothing close to how I use the camera.

That is exactly what I came across a few days ago.

As this is a process I normally do not do I never came across that.

Confirmed freeze on the M11M using the instructions above.

A few tweaks for clarity:

  1. Set File Format to “DNG +JPG" and Storage Management to "SD” only.*
  2. Take 2 SD cards A & B, matching size is not necessary. If images are on the cards, copy them off before this test because the cards will be erased.
  3. With camera off, insert card A, turn camera on, format it in camera, take 1 picture, turn camera off, and remove card A from camera.
  4. Insert card B, turn camera on, format it in camera, and immediately turn camera off, and remove card B from camera.
  5. Insert card A again, turn camera on, and take 1 picture.
  6. Switch the camera off and observe the red LED next to the cursor pad on the back. Freeze…

*Freeze will also happen with File Format set to "DNG" only and Storage Management set to "IN=SD". Perhaps as long as a DNG is being written to the SD card, the freeze will still happen.

Thanks for added clarity 😀.

Now it would be really interesting to hear results coming from M11's which are not yet on firmware 2.0.2.

So owners of M11's with FW1.6.1, FW1.7 (M11-P) or FW2.0.1 can you please perform the test and report over here?

I have to correct my earlier statement.
Just tried the above freeze guideline on my M11M running with 2.02 FW that has not frozen over the last 500 shots, using SanDisk Extreme PRO 200MB/s SD cards, and this “procedure” works indeed. Camera freezes after switching it off after step 6.

Essentially it needs an 'eject card and shutdown' function on the quick menu. I haven't got any other cameras which need removal of battery & therefore power to swap card. This is a classical 'volume not found error' by the sounds of things. That's the sort of thing which really annoys operating systems, particularly if the error handling isn't there/possible. This explains why my issues are infinitesimal when I use save to internal memory.

Overall though, the crashes in general suggest some ungainly error handling.

Still bloody love the camera though. Prefer it to my Canons and Fujis for most use cases.

No, because the freeze is caused by the "card exchange with unpowered M11 not handled properly in firmware" issue. The SL3 has a separate card door, no need to remove the battery for card exchange over there.

Edax - does yours not freeze if you change the SD card without removing the battery using the hole in the battery base you described in another post?

• UHS2 Sandisk Extreme Pro 300mb/s (64gb)
• UHS2 Sony Tough 300mb/s (64gb)
Both previously formatted with SD Card Formatter (quick format)

Does not happen on my M11 with firmware 1.6.1.

The camera with firmware 1.6.1 froze very rarely for me. Firmware 2.0.2 became a real nightmare for me. This means that "Edax-bug" is the main cause of troubles

And associated with DNG files as per the corrupt files issue already admitted by Leica.

Most people are using the internal memory and i'm not sure the "Edax-bug" happens then, but i may be wrong.

No you are not wrong. It is specific to the SD card.

But the bug may bite you eventually when copying IN to SD, even when formatting the card with our Golden Hammer "SD Card Memory Formatter". Until next firmware comes along, if you make a backup of the internal memory by "Storage Management / Backup Memory (In => SD)", please format the SD card in camera first every time before making the backup. I know, this sounds weird and illogical, but there really is a very good reason to do this.

That's what i did but no bite so far. I wonder if the fact that the card has been formatted with SD Card Formatter in the first place, before being formatted again in the camera, can play a role here.

Better to make it automatically "eject" the card at power off and "remount" the card at every power on. Better to have a delay than a crash.
