I'd forget about cameras and drive this thing around all day:)

Or maybe this one . . . another that I regret selling 🙁

Update:

My (second) M11 just froze right now. The exact same failure mode as previously (and same as with my first M11). No frame lines in the OVF at start up, nothing happens when pressing the shutter, etc, etc.

This time, no SD card was used, Lens Detection was Off, no profile was created.

Only thing is that I'm using a third party non-coded lens.

I'm pretty certain now that the Lens Detection code has a bug (which was my original thesis months ago). Will send a follow up to Leica.

Leica will tell you what happens hopefully but in the meantime you may wish to set up a user profile with lens detection off under firmware 1.6 and see what happens. My own freezes stopped immediately when i updated my user profiles under firmware 1.6 BTW.

It’s already off and under 1.6.

And then what? Should I go back to the profile anytime I change a setting?

I don't do it myself but i have not your problem so i would just set up a user profile as suggested and see what happens.

Turns out I misremembered. I do have a profile (created after updating to 1.6) but I don't go back to it.

Yeah that's what I did. I think it's time you admit your "fix" doesn't work for me, and it's very possible something is buggy with lens detection or third party/uncoded lens.

I'm just trying to help. You said you don't go back to this profile. What happens when you use it?

You said you don't go back to the profile either. I'm doing small changes to the profile every time (for example in photo review, I click on the select button to remove all info and have the full picture without anything else, then click again to see the info -- this counts as changing the setting). I'm not gonna go back to the profile every time.

I'm a software engineer. I am 99% sure that this has nothing to do with the freeze. Selecting a profile just change all settings to the saved settings. It's not different than changing the settings manually. I would be very surprised if it doesn't work like that.

Well this freeze happened one week after I stopped using the SD card and set lens detection to off. Would need maybe another week to trigger this bug. On my last M11, I was going back to the profile every time and it still froze a lot, but I had Lens Detection to Manual M. Since I now have proved that Lens Detection Off is not the cause, then it means going back to the profile is not the cause either (+ my reasons above that this is very unlikely to be the cause). The only common denominator between the last M11 and this M11 is third party/uncoded lenses. Don't you think this is a very likely culprit? Also Leica did have issues with third party lenses before, so it makes sense that it wasn't fully fixed.

Your "fix" with the profile is maybe just a coincidence, or a fix to a different kind of freeze.

Lens detection is never really off. Put on a coded lens, then turn camera on and then turn off lens coding. Without switching off the camera, remove the lens and put it right back on. You'll notice the lens coding setting in not on off anymore.

Yes I know that. That’s why I’m saying the lens detection module is likely one possible cause of freezes when using uncoded lenses. Maybe it fails to read a code and freezes up.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood your quote then,  "Since I now have proved that Lens Detection Off is not the cause"
To me, lens detection the way Leica are implementing it feels like its has the potential to cause issues.

It caused havoc with my Tele-Elmarit 90mm on my M10M where it recognised the mount screw as a lens code, and depending on how clean it was, was either allowing the camera to work properly or getting an error message, "lens not attached"

I have coded all my Voigtlander lenses, and haven't had a freeze for a long while. Most of my freezing issues were originally related in some way with using uncoded lenses.

No, we are in total agreement. I was refuting lct’s suggestion that putting Lens Detection to Off can solve/alleviate the freezing issues. If you look at my post history, I came up with “the lens detection module being buggy” hypothesis a few months ago when my first M11 was freezing up.

The good news is that if this hypothesis is true, then the freezes I’m experiencing is very likely software so can be fixed by a firmware update.

Regarding coding, do you mind pointing me to which tutorial you followed? There seems to be many ways to do it (painting directly on the frange, or buy a new frange, etc). I’m a little bit apprehensive on modifying my lenses. (Also both my Voigtlander don’t have a pre-cut at the code location, so painting on it directly might not work as it would add a layer).

Ah, ok.

I downloaded a publicly available stencil design from online. I can't find the link right now but pm me your email and I'll email you what I have.

I think it can either be 3D printed, but I had it laser cut out of a thin hard plastic. Took a bit of trial and error to find the right plastic and laser strength, since the resolution of the cut needs to be rater fine in the 6 bit area.
