Leica M11 Firmware V 1.6: GPS acquisition and bug fixes

I updated via Fotos, and everything went smoothly. I forgot to backup my profiles, and wasn’t prompted to do so (maybe this is only when updating via SD card), but this wasn’t a big deal as the M11 thankfully doesn’t delete your profiles when updating and everything was set properly after the update.

I have connected a few times and wifi connection seems faster and more reliable now (it used to take 2 or 3 attempts to connect). I thought GPS was broken but I just needed to update Fotos and now it is working perfectly.

For those who already upgrade their M11 to firmware version 1.6, did you guys upgrade via Leica FOTOS app? Or did you download the firmware on to the SD card?

How do you guys back up your User Profile/settings?

I opened FOTOS app on iPhone, switched the M11 on, enabled FOTOS, clicked update in the app and it dis its thing. Zero Problems.

From what I've experienced so far, firmware updates via the Fotos app can take 24 - 48 hours sometimes even longer to appear after initial release via the traditional SD card download process. I think it just depends on where you are in the world and when the firmware update is pushed to your local/regional Fotos app servers. Hopefully sooner than later for you.

it took less than 5min using the app.

Yes. Updating firmware from the Fotos app is my preference too. Very easy and IMO has a "cool" factor too. But as I wrote I have to wait sometimes a few days for the update to appear in my Fotos app, so for my region, patience is also required while everyone else updates via the SD card approach.

I'm hoping someone can explain how the GPS tagging performs in Eco-Mode and how much more battery does it drain from the camera.

It seems like my M11 has to be in Eco mode in order for geotagging to work. Correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that Eco mode relates to Wifi and not bluetooth, which means that the wifi needs to be on.

In Airplane mode (where I presume wifi is off) + bluetooth ON, geotagging doesn’t work. I read the description of geotagging function, and it should work with bluetooth only, no need for wifi to be on. Or perhaps I misunderstood something here?

In airplane mode both WiFi and BT are off. In Eco mode, only BT is on.

Old bug: When a user profile was active, restarting camera used to keep its settings active but its icon could be replaced by that of the default profile with no apparent reason.
Fix: None when doing nothing but saving the user profile as a new name or even its old name seems to fix the issue.

That’s good to know as I’ve posted about that one to!!! Still occurs on the SL2/S and Q2 though!!

Eco mode use Bluetooth and disable automatically connection to wi-fi (that you can do from app). And I think this is correct way to do it. As Bluetooth is less power hungry and quicker in initial connection. You can see it on the screen of M11 that it takes 5-10 seconds to receive geo information from phone. If you stay in full mode geotag also will work. But it also connect phone to M11 wi-fi. Maybe it is useful when you in studio. But for street I would stay on eco mode and use only Bluetooth. I think that airplane mode should kill both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

The updated Fotos software for the iPhone changed my North Latitude, West Longitude to South Latitude and East Longitude.  Which causes my photos taken with my M10-R, in the Mid Atlantic States in the U.S. to be geolocated in Western Indian Ocean. The older version that was on my iPad gives the correct signs for the Latitude and Longitude.  -- This is for photos taken with my M10-R with the Visoflex GPS. I am concerned that the M11 firmware and Fotos software have flipped the convention from the M10-R and am reluctant to upgrade the M11 firmware until I have some confidence that the geotagged data from the M10-R and M11 will both be correctly handled by Fotos and other software.

No it does not connect, it only prepares to connect. The Wifi module gets activeted but there is no connection until You tap the connection button in the App. This is a few seconds faster. No big difference to me.

Thank God for this GPS update. I can now categorically prove to my wife that I was at home, watching daytime TV at 12:24 today!

I installed the new firmware and used my M11 connected to my iPhone for about2 hours yesterday. My phone use about 50% of the battery maintaining the bluetooth connection to my camera on "eco" mode. That's not good.

What are others experiencing?

You have to use the new Fotos app to get the GPS feature. I found that once set up, the GPS tracking works even if the Fotos app is not running.

I saved my profile settings to an SD card. I reloaded the saved settings after the update was done.
