Hi,

I am new to this forum.  I spent some time trying to understand whether it is worth purchasing a new M6.  There is one camera (1992 production year) available near my location for a reasonable price, however, I wonder how well it would serve me over time compared to a camera that is new.

My second question: Will I still be able to purchase film 5 years from now?

Answer to second question, probably. Third question, will you be able to afford it, or more to the point justify the cost.

Of course.  Companies like Ilford - that is what they do.  And Kodak - same except Kodak has no issue with seeing how far they can push the purchase price of film.

It seems though that you are new to the film game - if I were you I would buy a different, much cheaper, non Leica camera to see if you actually like using film.

First of all, M6 is always worth to buy especially as a new shooter. Second, film will never die. Most likely consumer digital cameras will die first due to advance in cellphone camera inprovements in the future.

I had one of those 14403 Winders. It felt like a brick attached to the bottom of the camera and the shutter release would bounce after every exposure. I used it for two rolls then packed it away. It was sold long ago.

I never use my motor M.  I hate that bounce.

Got a motor which came with my M4-2 and which can also be used with other M film camera models like the M6. It is sturdy and works well for one film I used the motor with. But I haven't used it since due to its additional bulk and weight.

My newly acquired 2022 M6, and no it's not scratching the film

Used to own a titan M6 which I sold to my friend....  I've been regretting that choice ever since.. but no more!

Love the new black finish and feels really great in hands.

Just got my 2022 M6 with a production date of MAR-2023! Putting a roll through it and hoping that all of the film scratching issues from before were fixed!

Same here!

Some thoughts about the 2022 M6 with regard to handling/externals:

  • Red metering arrows and dot in the rangefinder seem brighter than the new MP I had recently.
  • The matte black paint is not only smoother compared to the M11, but it also feels much thinner. I'm hoping that means there could be a greater chance for brassing. It is a slicker, harder surface feel than black chrome and is lacking the soft feel of black chrome.
  • The brass top plate feels thinner than I expected. "Dink dink" sound when I tap it with a fingernail. It feels less solid than the MP, M-A, and digital M brass tops (including the silver M11). That said, it still feels well made, and I appreciate the weight savings.
  • Shutter speed dial is much improved over the MP and M-A (to me). It feels and sounds different when turned. It turns a bit like a nicely made aperture ring. The dial is much easier to rotate with one finger, and the clicks when changing shutter speed are confident and satisfying. I can easily rotate the dial with one finger, whereas the MP/M-A/M4-P I used to own were fairly stiff all required quite a bit of futzing around with one finger – I usually resorted to pulling back the wind lever and using two fingers to change the shutter speed.
  • ISO dial is easier to use than my MP and ISO changes are more confident with louder, more firm clicks that snap into place. I guess the price to pay for that is the dial is not flush.
  • Love having the rewind crank handle like my old M4-P back, especially when loading film. I use it to lightly rewind after loading so that I can confirm the rewind knob is rotating on the first shot (otherwise it could be a bad load job and not be advancing). Having the lever allows me to more easily feel that first sign of resistance. I couldn't finesse that as well with the MP/M-A rewind knob and the film would just all of a sudden get tight (like the cartoon dog that runs and gets jerked back by his leash which is tied to the ground).
  • Strangely this camera feels more modern to me than the MP – I think it's the crisp lines from the machine etched brass and the new matte black paint. Don't crucify me, but it feels slightly better made more thoughtfully executed than the MP and M-A.

I just like the red dot.  Love that.  It's like the three pointed star on a Mercedes.  And no-one who has a Mercedes tapes it up...

Love these points I agree, however, I do find the iso dial on the M7 easier to adjust than the 2022 M6. Could be because it’s older and worn. Something for me to get use to I guess! Do you plan on getting a half case for it?

@hdmesa do your ISO settings align correctly to the indicator mark?

I noted you made this comment previously and this was one of the first things I checked. Mine aligns correctly
