If you use firefox as browser, this plugin will do the job nicely:

https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/3905

Then look for the unique ID which is at the end of the file and looks like this:

Image Unique ID = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It's a hex code, which you can convert to decimal here:

hexadecimal conversion, convert decimal to hexadecimal

I never could find it :confused:

To me the simplest method :

Steps to display shutter actuations of a Leica DNG file:

  • open image file in Preview.app
  • open inspector
  • mark unique image id value (double click on it)
  • copy unique image id value (cmd + c)
  • open calculator.app (just type "1+1" or any other mathematical formula in spotlight and hit "enter")
  • switch view to "programmer" (cmd + 3)
  • paste hexadecimal value from unique image id into the calculator (cmd + p)
  • switch to decimal system (click the "10 button" on the calculator)

Do you mean M8Info?

Works fine on my MacBook Air with OSX 10.6.8.

Otherwise Photoshop CS3 does work as well (File / File Info / Advanced / Exif Properties / exif:ImageUniqueID).

In both cases, as well as with Preview.app, better use an original file though.

The imageuniqueid is not neccesarily the same as the shutter actuation count. It may look that way for many, but it is not correct if your shutter has been replaced or upgraded. The imageuniqueid was not reset when Leica upgraded my M8 to the quieter M8.2/M9 shutter.

Getting the ImageUniqueID is the only way to determine the number of shutter actuations AFAIK. This can be achieved through different softwares like Photoshop, M8Info, Exif Viewer or Preview.app indeed. In your M8Info problem, Lion's compatibility must be the culprit i guess.

Is there an iPad app that handles shutter count for Leicas DNG files? I was looking in AppStore but could not figure out if there is?

Thx Erik

If you know the ImageUniqueID any scientific/HEX calculator will give you the number of shutter activations.

It getting the ID that is hard. PS has come out with a editing app for android and I think one for IOS is going to follow soon. That might do it.

I go via Leica jpg -> Firefox + plug in -> HEX converter. It would be good to just press one icon on the iPad and select a DNG file. Well hopfully it will show up soon :o

This is the only way to determine actuation numbers on M8 & M9 AFAIK.

There is no data recorded in the image files that is the shutter actuation count. There is probably a counter kept in the camera's non volatile ram.

I know I, in 2007, published a paper on the metadata in the M8 image files that asked the question if the counter in the maker notes was the shutter count, but it isn't, it is the same as the ImageUniqueID on the public exif block. Neither number is reset when the shutter is replaced. Combined with the camera's serial number it makes up a unique id for each file that comes out of the cameras. For some cameras it indicates an approximate count, but unless you have the camera's full history you can not say whether the number is correct or not.

"Hallo Johan,

#1 iPad App now show the ImageUniqueID - Photogen.

#2 There is also an App for HEX conversion - iConvertHDB

Very smooth to keep track of shutter count when shopping for a used M body. Ask for a DNG file via mail and run these two apps.
