I have a 2021 MP with ~100 rolls through it. The shutter curtain's white metering dot appears to be showing some wear. Is this normal? I'm asking because I still have some warranty left. Metering is accurate when I compare it to an external meter. Thank you all for your help.

If you look into the instructions of the new M6 - which are the same in this point as for the MP or the old M6 - you'll find a note on p.34:

The uneven coverage of the metering dot is due to the fact that no condensed and thick layer of paint can be applied to the flexible rubber lining of the shutter without negatively impacting on its function. The measuring accuracy, however, will not be lessened by that fact.

Not good enough! The dot on my M2 has completely worn away!!

Do you have an M3 you could compare it to?  I'm just wondering if Leica just didn't make the paint sticky enough back then.

My M6 has one of those "magical" white dots. Sometimes it's completely gone and the next time I look it may be there in perfect condition. I guess the camera is worth a fortune...

I have an MP bought in 2004 with a slight tendency to overdrive by 1/2 to 2/3 of a diaphragm.
I noticed a wear of the white point on the curtain (normal I think over time... I shoot at least 3 films a month) which therefore reflects less light on the cell. I increased the sensitivity setting to 250 iso for 160 iso, and everything is perfect now, having exactly what my Sekonic indicates. I prefer that to sending it to Leica etc...

Mine looks exactly like that and still matches my other meters.

Hello Joel,

Welcome to the Forum.

Having the color of the "dot" mimic an 18% gray card would lessen the sensitivity range of the meter. It is more useful to have the surface as light in color as possible so that it can reflect a greater amount of a lower level of light on to the sensor.

The lack of pigment on some portions of the "dot" may be a purposeful action to standardize the amount of light reflected to the sensor.

Best Regards,

Michael

Directly from page 95 of the user manual.  Describing the metering dot....

@Huss.. When you get your new M6 I hope you post a picture of the white dot.

From the sound of it, they are all pre-worn from the factory for a good reason. ..

Remember the M6 has all new parts!  So I doubt it will be the same....   ;)
