Touché!

How easily we forget. I've just been shooting some film myself, and there are dust spots everywhere! I think it's a good idea for digital shooters to hang onto at least one film body and shoot some of the ol' celluloid (I know, I know ...) once in a while just to sort of keep in touch with what it was like. I mean, I like film too, but it was certainly no picnic compared to digital.

I pulled this one from the film forum....

What is it about dust?

Last week I developed a roll of Delta. Followed the instructions of others here - like running hot water in the bathroom to add moisture and remove floating dust before hanging the neg up to dry - and everything worked a treat. No dust. Nothing. Didn't have to spot one frame on the whole roll.

This week, followed exactly the same procedure and the film looked like someone had emptied the vacuum cleaner bag on it. I was spotting for ages in PhotoShop.

Aargh!

At least that is easier than doing it on traditional darkroom prints!

Indeed. I'm considering suicide or mass murder.

If you go for the suicide, would your Nocti be available? Obviously, if you go for the mass murder, the attorney will get all your gear; perhaps you could mention our "For Sale" section to him?

I just mentioned suicide to add an human touch to the post. I never really considered it, being more inclined to mass murder.

But I plan to get away with it. Maybe because I'm watching to many american shows and I'm sure this Grissom guy is not that good :D

I should have kept my thoughts to myself and not begun this tread. Never again.

Richard, I can understand getting frustrated with a camera, but two things bother me (personally; I don't know what others think):

- You post here to say that you have already made a decision. Honestly, who cares. If you post to help make the decision, that is another matter.

- The last straw was dust on the sensor. WTF? That has nothing to do with Leica and everything to do with dust being everywhere in the world.

Honestly, I think people need to be a bit more understanding: the suggestion that the only permissible type of thread are 'helpful' or instructive ones is ridiculous - there are plenty which amount to no more than "I just got my new M8 and I love it..."

This happens to be the (diametric) opposite to that - and it's no less appropriate as a post than any other.

As for dust on the sennsor being an inadequate reason for giving-up on the camera - well, just as Carsten says, it was the last straw.

I can empathize with this misfortune - maybe a little restraint and good manners from some of the members here might be appropriate - even when someone rejects the holy icon you all hold so dear...

I think the question is begged - why when one spends $5k plus on a camera (not including filters, lens coding, etc) does one then have to spend weeks having it fixed or replaced, and then after that one receives it back form a company priding themselves in their craftmanship and attention to detail with a filthy sensor. And not just dust, but oil. Fortunately, my replacement from NJ came with a pristine sensor and has remained that way since. It is now developing other problems and I'll have to find a window to send it in for yet another extended stay.

I think the gentleman knows and understands how to clean a sensor. It's the lack of caring on Leica's part to have some sense of quality control that he's miffed about. Leica should be paying interest as well on the amount of time new cameras have had to be immediately given up to service for extended stays and then not returned in a proper working fashion.

It's been a real love/hate relationship for me with the M8. I love the form but the function has a lot left to be desired, imho.

Nah, dont be so bitter about it Richard. You have poked a stick in the ant's nest. We are all shocked to see that someone takes the dramatic step of actually DUMPING the camera that we all hold so dear. I am sorry to hear about your troubles. And I agree that Leica should have done better. It seems they are under a lot of strain these days. Otherwise they would not want to risk having their reputation tarnished by sloppy work. Why don't you send us a note when you've sold it. I'd like to know the price. Then I would love to hear what you buy in stead and how you get along with it. Bye for now and thanks for your contributrions on the forum so far :o

. . and for starting this very popular thread :D
