abrewer Posted August 16, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 16, 2006 Do you prefer the SLR over a rangefinder? Need the longer lenses et al? Just curious why you'd make the switch now with the M8 on the way. Thanks. Allan
zanydave Posted August 16, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted August 16, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) To be honest, I do prefer the SLR. My M7 seems to be gathering dust......... But I love my R8
zanydave Posted August 16, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted August 16, 2006 Just bought a 280/4 Apo Telyt.. Wow! Kinda makes the decision for you.
franklinh Posted August 16, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 16, 2006 It's OK, Zanydave, it's just a camera, albeit a very nice camera the M - but I see you still like photography. If you gave that up, I would be sad. And you are just getting .... a different Leica! Way to go!

telyt Posted August 17, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 17, 2006 Just bought a 280/4 Apo Telyt.. Wow! Kinda makes the decision for you. Yup, sure does. It re-defined my basic wildlife photography kit, made me concentrate on getting closer than ever just so I could use the 280, and still after several years using it I get goose bumps when I see the results. http://www.wildlightphoto.com/birds/accipitridae/coha05.jpg Cooper's Hawk - R8/DMR, 280 f/4 APO, ISO
gib_robinson Posted August 17, 2006 Share #12 Posted August 17, 2006 Sorry you feel you have to give up your M equipment. It is SO different from the R. It may be a while before I get an M8, but I will hang on to my M gear because it is so light to carry and quiet to use. I also just love it and I don't want to part with photo equipment I love. stuny Posted August 17, 2006 Share #14 Posted August 17, 2006 Dave - Some of us (me included) just greatly prefer the SLR view of our subjects over the rangefinder view, regardless of lens. In fact, I've enver been able to adjust to the rangefinder view. Since you clearly prefer SLR (and you're right -- The R8 is a honey), and since your M is just gathering dust, your decision is clearly correct. You will be very pleased with the DMR results, even before going "raw", but even more so after.
Guest rubidium Posted August 17, 2006 Share #15 Posted August 17, 2006 The fallout from owning a 280/4.0 Apo continues to amaze me.
earleygallery Posted August 17, 2006 Share #16 Posted August 17, 2006 If you need to use a 280 then surely its a 'no brainer'
mgcd Posted August 17, 2006 Share #17 Posted August 17, 2006 It always amuses me how "M" people take it almost personally when someone says they're switching from M to R. Akin to leaving a sect I guess... While I've had a few rangefinders, M4-2, M4-P, M6, I'll confess that I'm basically a R person. Cheers,
albertwang Posted August 17, 2006 Share #18 Posted August 17, 2006 That's cool. Of course I like having both the M and R option. Lately I've been in the M mood. Plus it's all mechanical. I don't have to worry about batteries!
Sandokan Posted August 17, 2006 Share #19 Posted August 17, 2006 I just started buying M equipment as I enjoy street photography and just having it with me when out - with the R, it was a conscious decision to take it out with me as it weighs so much. I will keep the R as it so good for studio work and with tele lenses and I still plan on getting a DMR one day... So if you have to sell the M stuff to buy the R, then let me know what you are selling
fotografr Posted August 17, 2006 Share #20 Posted August 17, 2006 For every day street shooting and for taking trips, you can't beat the M system. I seriously doubt whether you would sling an R8 or R9 with DMR and a lens over your shoulder whenever you go out. I think it would be a real sacrifice to get rid of your M system--one that you would likely regret at some point. I guess it all comes down to what kind of shooting you do. Doug--Your images give us goose bumps, too.
