I would've loved to use the original hood remake (the SR original allowed for e41 filters & hood at same time), but that rounded hood does not look good on the SR from my PoV, so even if it didn't vignette I wouldn't use it.

That being said, the pre lux 35 (v2, not SR), requires a hood to use a filter, and that to me is even more annoying, so if I have to pick a trade-off, I rather be able to use a filter without a hood than needing a hood to fit a filter.

I'm fine to leave the hood at home & keep the lens the most compact possible, which to me, is its biggest advantage on top of its dreamy rendering wide open.

PS - So far loving the lens & the original SR was one of my top 3 leica lens, so still can't believe Leica remade it! The hood situation, while not ideal, it definitely is not a reason for me personally to not purchase the lens.

A hood that screws into a filter is a non-starter for me. Cheap, cheap, cheap-looking compared to the look and feel of the 12504 hood from my v2. The 12504 is only annoying to use if you have a damaged one that's difficult to unscrew. And owning one or more extra hoods lets you switch between filters with a fast pinch of the filter release tabs.

The same thing can be said about the 50 Lux Black Chrome, and I did enjoy using it without the hood. But there is something lost here with both lenses that could have been perfect if they had only given a little more thought to the designs.

yeah I don't like both solutions at all ahah but if I have to pick one, I prefer keeping my lens elements safe by having a filter, and the pre lux always bothered me that I can't keep it compact & protect the lens at the same time. I rarely use hoods as I like to keep it small / light, so the pre lux trade off for me is way worse than the SR trade off. If people prefer to always use a hood & filter at the same time, obviously the pre lux is a better trade off :) But yes, both the pre lux & the remake, Leica should've done better, it's not rocket science.

Makes perfect sense. I did the same with the 28 Summaron: filter + keeping it compact without the hood most of the time.

The situation is different with the LHSA 50 Lux Black Chrome (or silver chrome, as that version also exists), since you can use the old original hood Leica made for the pre-asph. Summilux 50 v2 lens that did not include a built-in hood. No problems with filters then either. I use my lens with that old hood with and without filters, and it works just fine either way.

But due to a different construction, you can not use the old hood on the 35 Lux reissue.

Got a response from Leica:

My email has been sent along to the developers of the lens themselves to investigate the issue. Here’s hoping I get an answer soon. Will keep people updated.

I've received the same response about the hood and vignetting inquiry.

Most troubling is that more than month ago, I sent my 35 Lux reissue to Leica New Jersey since it was back-focusing, had sticky focusing action and wobbly aperture ring. Today I got a message stating that they don't have the parts to fix my lens and it was sent to Germany! What parts are needed to fix these minor issues with the lens?

Could you post a picture of that old original hood?

Maybe they had to replace the whole lens housing? That’s really odd. I’m really not understanding their QC these days. It’s no wonder so many people are buying 3rd party lenses, as it seems like they are more consistent in construction, almost as good of quality glass, and a fraction of the cost, and if there is an issue, a replacement won’t take months.

Ask them if they would also send the developers an E46 Leica filter 💀

So I got a response, and I’m not sure y’all will like it:

"The vignetting and the movable aperture adjustment ring are deliberate. The goal was to make a replica of the 1961 lens on which the vignetting and the "loose" aperture ring were present. It is due to the design and this we wanted to achieve again."

I didn’t even ask about a loose aperture ring. So, my guess is a LOT of people are asking this question.

I got the exact same response. Here is what I replied:

Hi Tim,

I know this is the response a few Leica shooters received from Leica in regards to this but I don't think Leica understood the enquiry.

Yes, the optical design yields high vignetting and that's something they emulated from the classic. However, what's been discussed is something different: The use of a filter in between the lens and included rounded hood (12486) causes "hard" vignetting. How bad? It depends on the thickness of the filter but even the slimmest filters cause the issue. It's not just regular vignetting, it's 'hard' vignetting which is pure black and unrecoverable unless cropping the image.

In my previous email, I sent you links demonstrating this. Please ask the Leica product development to replicate this test so they can see the issue and offer a solution for us.

Here is the link again:
