My dealer contacted me a week ago. He had a new silver 35 FLE2 in stock and I could test it if I wanted.  So I went and for the first time in my life I really shook a lens to test it. The lens passed the shake test with flying colors. I didn't think I would appreciate the 40cm close focus distance so much. In the end, I couldn't resist the temptation (which of course had been clear to my dealer from the beginning)...

Today I suddenly became curious about the depth of field specifications for this lens when using close focusing. However, turns out I can't find information on this. Does anyone know if there is a PDF for this lens that contains the depth of field table and graphs? The previous FLE technical data pdf from Leica had this information as well, but the new one seems to lack it.

For a focal length, These tables are derived from the formulas. The distances are a function of the focal length, the circle of confusion diameter and the aperture.  I would be very surprised if the table was «lens specific »

I'm sure with math you can figure it out, but that's never been my strongest subject. Specifically I am curious about the close focus part here, since the previous FLE didn't have this I can't assume it's the same.

The 35mm APO document does contain a table, and I could assume at all stops it will be similar on the new Summilux – however that obviously does not contain wide open at f1.4. It's also just interesting to me that every lens seems to have this table in their spec sheet, except for this lens.

Not sure when Leica officially restarted production but just received one today and it’s manufacture date is 3/3/23.

I just received a new one from Leica USA that must have been sitting around for a while. Mine has a date of 2022/06/20 on it.

Check the aperture blades Rob. The early 35 FLE II batches had defectives samples and Leica stopped production last Fall for a month or so to sort things out.

Yes I have been. I have been playing with it a lot to make sure the blades are stable. Based on the sealed box and I got it from Leica USA, I wonder if this was an early sample produced to be sent out to testers. So far everything looks good on the lens.

I own the current Summilux 35mm and APO Summicron 35mm lenses. Both are great, but for different reasons.

The APO 35mm is almost permanently mounted to my M11 and M10-R before that. It's small, light and crazy sharp. I spend 3-1/2weeks on vacation in Europe and the APO 35mm never left my camera even though I had my APO Summicron 50mm in my bag. For my future travels, I will only bring the APO 35mm. Traveling light with one lens is actually liberating. I used my iPhone 13 Pro camera for ultra wide and tele shots.

That said, I'm not selling my Summilux 35mm as I do use it on occasion. I think the new Summilux is a great add to the M lens line up, but I don't have a need to buy one. However, If I could not afford the APO 35mm, the Summilux 35mm would be my most used lens as it was before I purchased the APO version.

How would you decribe the differences in image character and image quality, despite the fact that the Summilux offers a shallower

depth of field with f1.4?
