I am in UK. I have been checking the photolab I have been using for the last few years and they have been out of stock for nearly 2 years.  I did try your approach and found some fuji 200 at a pharmacy chain (at a fairly steep price). Perhaps the film manufacturers are prioritizing supply for generic shops instead of specialist photo shops.

I've certainly bought film in the last couple of years (because that has been the period when I got back into film). Analogue Wonderland, Parallax, AG Photographic, Bristol Cameras and Speed Graphic are where I have looked and bought.

Most recently, hunting for Portra at an acceptable price, I found some on ebay from the dealer 35mmphotostop (run from a private house in Bristol).

At the end of the NBC national news broadcast on Monday evening, the final segment was about the resurgence of film photography. The producers used a super 8 camera to film it and spoke to shop owners and photographers about why they were using film and how the market has expanded. Who knew we were trend setters?

The subject of 'the price of Film' piqued my interest so I've just had a look to see what I could find on the web.

According to one of the merchant's adverts in the Amateur Photographer back in 1991 a 36 exp. roll of HP5 cost £2.80 which - according to the Bank of England inflation calculator - equates to roughly £6.20 in today's terms. Today a roll of the same typically seems to cost around £7.25.

Another website, comparing the price of a roll of Ektachrome, found that there was a relative increase in cost between 1984 and 2021 of 13%.

One UK-based pharmacy chain (possibly the one mentioned by andrew01 in the post quoted) is currently advertising 36-exp. rolls of Fuji 200ASA C-41 film for £8.99 per roll which, somewhat surprisingly, is slightly cheaper (allowing for inflation) than it was 30 years ago when, apparently, it would set one back around £9.25 per roll.

Considering the greatly reduced volume of sales garnered by 35mm film nowadays in comparison to 'yesteryear' I'm actually rather amazed that film isn't more expensive than it is.

Philip.

Lets hope the trend continues.  I have had a nice small collection of film cameras for a long time but from 2019 to 2021 I managed to accumulate a collection of almost all the desirable film cameras from the 80s to early 2000’s and have had many of them serviced.  Some of these were the cameras I could only dream of owning in their day. I have FM2N, F2AS, F3, F1N, EOS 1N,KX, MX, LX, OM2n, OM4Ti,XD7, Contax S2, Contax RX, Leica SL, R6.2, M3,M6, and a bunch of cheaper cameras.  Its a lot of fun shooting all of these high end cameras and I don’t think I would ever want to trim the collection down.

I can't seem to find Portra 800 anywhere. There seems to be close to no good colour film in Australia at the moment for 35mm.

In France we are lucky to have choices of expensive negative films, like here

Portra 800 36, 18.50€

set of five rolls, 88.20€

even good b&w film is not cheap anymore

Neopan Acros 100 II, five rolls, 71€

I just went to drop off some film at my local lab. They had more film in the film fridge than I've seen in a couple years, including fresh stock of Provia 100F in 35mm and 8x10 ($532/box!), along with almost every current Kodak emulsion. A few months ago color film was nowhere to be found, but the situation seems to be improving significantly.

Lot of "retro" in the marketing world today, usually sold to people who weren't born when the original products were selling. The current marketing philosophy toward (or by) young people seems to be, "Anything your grandparents owned or did was cool; anything your parents own or do is dumb."  Next thing you know there will be a market for records and record players.  Oh... wait...What?  You're kidding!!  Records are now outselling CDs?  Go figure ;)

I mentioned earlier that I should drag my M6 out to see if it still works in preparation for it becoming the "hot new Leica".  Someone suggested that if I wasn't using it I should I sell it.  That's probably good advice but I kept it because, of the myriad cameras I have owned/used, I ENJOYED that M6 the most.  I just couldn't bring myself to sell it.

But heck, maybe I'll try that old-fashioned film thing again... 🤣

Do you mean the ColorPlus 200? I bought three bricks last year for just under €50 each. Worked out at around €4.90 per roll. Now it’s over €70 for a brick a ten. The Fuji equivalent is just under €60. I wonder if there was some mistake in the price you paid for your Fuji200? Good for you if there was :)

No, it says made in Japan on the box.  The colorplus Fuji says made in the USA.  It was just over $15 for a 3 pack, so I bought a case.

Off topic but the strangely the Fujifilm 200 available in USA market that says “made in USA”, is Kodak Gold 200 stock rebranded by Fuji. Unsure why/how but read about it elsewhere and so tried it.  sure enough it was identical to Kodak Gold 200 that I use a lot.

Only managed to get it here once which was handy during a Kodak drought .

(Not to be confused with C200 which is Fuji and presumably says “made in japan” )

Sorry I wasn’t clear, the ColorPlus I mentioned is Kodak (see below), not Fuji.

Well...You guys (Huss) have convinced me.  Clearly I've fallen in with a bad crowd!!  I ordered a 10 pack of HP5 this morning, and dragged out my M6 - I didn't know until now (reading about it on the internet) that they changed the M6 "label" during production.  Mine has "Leitz" on the red dot and at some point they changed to "Leica."   I bought it shortly after the M6 came out and used it for years.  I bought an M7 in the late 90's but never really bonded with it and sold it along with all my other Leica gear in '02, keeping only the M6 body.

Re the HP5 - I was a Tri X fan back in the day but in looking for film, found that TriX was 2x the price of HP5 here in the UK.  We'll see how this "experiment" goes.  I might end up spending more money and buying some TriX...OR deciding that film was a fun experiment and going. back to my digital Leicas and putting the M6 back in its box. ;)

I guess we both misunderstood!  As Graham mentioned, Fuji sold/sells Kodak 200 film in the US badged as  Fuji, AND they sell ‘real’ Fuji 200!

That’s the thing, when you use an inflation calculator film is not expensive.  We just think it is!  We just want everything dirt cheap.

So you don't have a re-issue M6, you have a pre-issue M6. Nice!

Have fun with the film. HP5 is nice. Tri-X isn't the same now as it was "back in the day".
