Female Seals are called Cows. The 'Cow Edition' probably doesn't have the same ring to it 🙃

There of course have been, and are, incredible women photographers. As well as other notable women in other fields. If Leica deems Seal worthy, they must have created limited edition cameras honoring women before him, right? How many women, I wonder, are camera collectors rather than photographers? The demographic I imagine buying these limited editions to keep in mint condition in their boxes are overwhelmingly men of a certain age.

a.noctilux Posted October 12, 2022 Share #664 Posted October 12, 2022 (edited) We are 💋🙊 Now we are talking about camera sex. In some countries, they talked of the camera as "she" equivalent, doesn't this true ? Edited October 12, 2022 by a.noctilux

Maybe Leica should test the water with a watch calculated to appeal to their core collector demographic of affluent middle-aged men. Perhaps they could have one honouring Margaret Thatcher's centenary in 2025?
kivis Posted October 12, 2022 Share #667 Posted October 12, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) An M6 with a zinc top for almost as much money as a MP/M-A. I don't get it. Why?
logan2z Posted October 12, 2022 Share #668 Posted October 12, 2022 Ilse Bing would seem to be an obvious choice - German and apparently known as 'The Queen of the Leica'. Although I don't know if she's 'famous' enough to have a camera named after her.

I think this is a valid point, and one that underlines the often clumsy marketing schemes of Leica. I mean, seriously, honouring Seal or Lenny does not give you “street cred”, except maybe in the eyes of fifty year old dentists. So, why would you not rather honour any of the great female photographers? There really is no cure for these douchebaggery attempts at make Leica rock roll. 1

I almost bought one a few years ago but at 6'4" tall it was a tight squeeze. Awesome car, though, still think about it often.

Joan Jett, love her or hate her, was much more a rock n roll revolutionary than Seal or Kravitz. Stevie Nicks shot a whole series of in the middle o the night Polaroids from her heyday. Leica could have created a Nicks Sofort. But no, I guess Leica doesn’t recognize female pioneers.

Huss Posted October 12, 2022 Share #677 Posted October 12, 2022 Catherine Leroy used a Leica M2 while covering the Vietnam war. But no, make a “reporter” issue detailing Lenny Kravitz’s exploits.

These were seriously bad a$$ photographers. Of course they were. But I think you may be missing the point of why Leica makes limited edition cameras of questionable taste (not to mention luxury watches and expensively rebadged Instax cameras) in the first place. They are more niche marketing opportunities than they are celebrations of remarkable individuals, and Leica know their market, which is why they are 'honouring' Seal and Lenny Kravitz rather than (say) FKA twigs, Carolyn Bertozzi or Lynsey Addario. I'd rather they remembered Gerda Taro with a photography award like the Robert Capa medal rather than an overpriced trinket that will never leave its display case. They do at least do this: https://leica-camera.com/en-US/leica-women-foto-project
