I think this would also work well with a 16:9 crop and lose some of the sky which isn't adding a lot of value to the shot.

That works too. I always have to grit my teeth to crop away that much of the shot but with the UWA it's sometimes helpful to do it.

Yes, I was a bit lazy...and I like to "free style". But cropping is something that I need to do more. I often go back to a photo a couple of days after posting or whatever, and think that it would be so much improved by it. Need to put that on the top of my mental list, rather than at the bottom. Thanks!

Ok, last one for today.   Here's a fun one:  CL with Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f/2.8-4 APO manual focus, circa 1995 (the rarely seen 6th version of this lens).  It's a pretty sharp lens.  Because no data transfers to the camera, I don't know what aperture, but it was taken at 1/400, ISO 800, EV -0.6.  No crop- this was the full frame (probably fully extended at 210mm, effectively 315mm on the CL).

I notice that you seem to use a standard "-" EV compensation. In my experience this is not optimal on the CL, losing dynamic range. My advice would be to activate the histogram in the EVF and use the EV compensation wheel to optimize exposure. I find that the camera needs a "+" compensation far more often than one would expect.

Jaapv-   I always use the histogram, and always seek to move it as far to the right as possible, but just slightly to the left of the right side, to make sure highlights are not overexposed.  I believe this extends from my experience as a slide film shooter in my film days, and I believe I'm capturing maximum dynamic range (I also seek to shoot at ISO 100 as much as possible to preserve DR, although the recently posted photos are at 200, 400 and 800) .

With histogram pushed to the right (but just barely or not at all touching the right side), I then open up shadows as needed in post.  I'm surprised that you say that you find the camera needing a "+" compensation very often.  In fact, I find quite the opposite.  I generally find exposures almost always look best (on my calibrated Benq monitor, not in camera) at -0.3EV.

Of course some photos can be exposed at exact meter reading and deliver a perfect bell curve histogram, but a majority of the time I find that some highlight- from backlighting or washed out sky for instance- means that a significant portion of the histogram is pushing toward that right side wall, and in those times I find that -EV keeps the highlights from climbing that wall.

Thanks for all your work on this forum!

Sorry for earlier postings without attachment.  Not sure why that happened.  Here's hoping third time's the charm:

18-56mm at 56mm, -0.6 EV, ISO 400

You nailed it this time, in more ways than one!

Looking at the results Jayne has been getting with that Panasonic lens I finally decided to go for it.  It's not a smooth operator like the Leica 24-90 but it feels a lot lighter and that extra reach helps.  Specially on a CL.

Something I don't like about that sky/leaf transition but maybe it's just the cloudy sky.  I'll give it another try when the sky is bluer.
