Great picture, think that lens is the best T lens of them all.

For me, I love shallow depth of field so this is my favorite. But, the TL 60, too is 'right there'. (But then I look at Louis' photo(s) and he creates 'magic' with the 18-56 too).

18-56 is a very good glass, Rob. I love the size and the sharpness; therefore, I use it mostly for traveling. My only problem with this glass is how slow it is!,,, Not very practical for low light!

 

I tried a 50 mm SL in the Leica store the other day; it was huge on CL, as I suppose your 60 mm and others are. But I really enjoy using MF lenses. I am more in control. My Nikkor 50 mm is my favorite glass. It is f/1.4, it is smaller, sharp, and gives beautiful shallow background that like you, I enjoy very much. This is the reason why I am not using the excellent 28 mm very often. It doesn’t give much shallow background.

We are leaving on our long trip tomorrow, Dubai, Sydney and Hong Kong from Canada. I have 2 CL bodies so plan on walking around with one with the 18-56 which I think will get the most use. The other Cl I will put the 35mm TL on it in my bag. Think I will also carry the 11-23 in my bag as well. Bag doesn't need to be very large for just the CL and 2 lenses. Suspect that will give me everything I might need. Be interested in your comments.

The 60mm is like the TL 35 1.4, but those two remain significantly smaller and lighter than the SL 50.  The SL 50 is probably my favorite lens now; even on the Leica apsc cameras it renders such beautiful bokeh and shallow depth of field.  If one wants AF the 3 lenses discussed are just terrific.

I am, personally, not a very Wide Angle guy, but I can understand your need of a WA for shooting those Dubai Disney Land style buildings! ( ;) ). For me, 18-56 would have been the most useful. 35 is a superb glass as Rob has demonstrated it already many times. But I guess you would have enough light in the Persian Gulf with the slow 18-56.

 

For a second camera, what I would do is to have a longer range lens. For instance, if I travel with two cameras, I would put 18-56 on CL; and my old Nikkor MF 85 mm on my T for closeups.

 

But again, it's me. You may have a different style of shooting. I always believed that the ideal equipment would be one camera and one lens... But when you travel, you often need more lens ranges! ;)

Actually, I was originally curious about 75 mm. I was in DC for few days and checked DC Leica store. They didn't have 75 mm, but told me it is the same size as 50 mm that they had and I tried.. It looked solid and nice. I guess we can get used to any size. I am used to big ones with my ex-Nikkor zoom, and my Angenieux zoom that I am still using. :)

Just bought a 40mm Summicron for $600. Couldn’t beleive how small it is on the CL and bokeh looks pretty good. Seems like quite a bargain for a quality lens.

My understanding is that the SL 75 is smaller and lighter, i.e. more compact than the SL.  I have not seen it as yet. On paper, I prefer the SL 50 because it gives me 1.4 and on the CL/T becomes 'like' a 75 f2, which I thought would be more utile than a 75 f2 and 112 f3, but that is individual choice.

Bon voyage! 

I'm thinking that maybe keep the 11-23 on one camera. It will give you up to an equivalent 35mm range which might be better for urban settings, but that's an easy decision when you are at your destination.

I'd keep the 35 on the camera for 50mm perspective and it will certainly be good for darker environments.

Not sure that there are 'right' answers, but I'll look forward to your photos.

I'll be in Gdansk this summer, as part of a land tour of Poland. Sounds like the WW2 museum might be a worthwhile stop?  Will also be in Warsaw, Krakow, tour of Auschwitz and some smaller cities along the route.

Yes ..... well worth a look .......both the old town in Gdansk and Krakow are photogenic and interesting. Auschwitz is a real conversation stopper ...... We hardly said anything on the way round as words can’t really express the emotions provoked. Plenty of interest in Poland. If you PM me with your itinerary I’ll happily suggest the more unusual things that the usual guide books miss. Over the last 15 years we have been virtually everywhere .... thankfully the roads are much improved, even if the average Polish driver hasn’t ..... Edited by thighslapper
