In memory of @Steven who had a track record of inside information: A cheap film Leica is not going to happen. He mentioned what it really is and his posts made sense to me. Leica can't even keep up with demand for the MP. RIP @Steven, your info is greatly missed by some of us 😭

....   there is a market opening up for young people who are turning more and more to analogue film and on occasion the prices of film cameras explode 😀  people are content with their laptop for photos ...  just look at what's going on right now  Xaomi which has just teamed up with Leica ...   finished Leica and Huawei

IIRC he mention a new variation of the M6. Which seems a bit odd now as another thread mentions that the electronics are no longer available. Maybe they have had a batch of chips made, it doesn’t cost that much.

m6 without electronics is like an m4p

There was some talk - I do nor emember if via DMs or public - about a new version of M6 being released as an ANNIVERSARY item, so it could be it is due in 2024 for 40 years of M6.

Definitely not going any cheaper i guess…

Steven, the rich dude that impressed us all by solely his Purchasing Power?

I was more impressed by his enthusiasm, passion and frankly talent as a photographer. He didn’t mince his words, of which there were many many, but I liked his frankness. He was a refreshing person to have here.

If there were ever to be a new M6 (maybe for the anniversary in 2024), I doubt they'd bother with the old electronics (there is after all a precedent with the TTL, which they still called an M6 though it had an upgraded meter). Today, it would be cheaper and easier for them just to change the cosmetics of the MP (new-style winder and rewind crank, plain black chrome or silver chrome top, etc.). You could buy basically this camera via the old à la carte programme,; Leica would just have to add 'M6' engravings. And they could sell this 'M6 Classic 2' at a premium rather than a discount...

Couldn’t they use an M10D body, shutter, meter but have a film back instead of the sensor? The battery might have to be bigger than the two in an M7 so put it in the take-up spool a bit like the M2 slow loading system. That way Leica can reuse the the M10 shutter mechanism RF and body they already have so tooling and manufacture would be less expensive.

What about the tooling for the rest of the camera? I'm afraid your idea sounds incredibly expensive and very unattractive – in short, a bit bonkers. It would be the opposite of those film Leica M bodies with a digital back (or insert) that we were meant to see in the early 2000s.

I posted this already earlier: there is a (slightly) cheaper version of the MP - it’s called M-A😉

Expecting something even cheaper would require to remove more features from either of those, significantly more. A rejuvenated M6 would not fulfill any of this requirement, so it wouldn’t be cheaper.

I suspect there's not a simple relationship between retail price and the price of components. Leica charges what the market will bear. That ~1% price difference between the MP and the M-A is a largely symbolic bit of product differentiation. The only things they could remove that would actually save them significant production costs would be the rangefinder and viewfinder, creating a camera of interest only to collectors now that nobody uses film cameras for technical purposes. If Leica really wanted to create some publicity and sell a film M for a bit less, they might label it 'Made in Portugal' (which they mostly are anyway) and put it in a less fancy box.

I don't think engraving a different country would enable them to reduce the cost (as you say, most production is in Portugal as it is) and a plain brown card box would save how much?

The Titanium M has sold out before hitting the shelves, OK one for the collectors, but what would a 'cheap' film M look like and would anyone really want to buy it?

Let's say Leica had Cosina make some more of their M mount Voigtlanders but rebadged them as Leica.  Perfectly good cameras but would Leica users want to buy them, or would they just buy a used 'real' M body?
