Main shutter roller broken.

Everyone already known the shutter roller no longer exist. Even DAG bought the entire parts from Leitz, Canada parts department half a year ago and also no roller. I ask Don to take photo for me.

My only option is to make 1350014 becomes super-sized light meter, so I ask Don to rise metering stalk permanently.

You may possible check with Don if he has spare for M2-M4 and if can adopt it for M5. For sure not a straightforward repair but possibly cheaper than getting another damaged M5 as a donor

I doubt it since Don did not said this option, at least I can ask.

Actually I think about to search M3/M4/M6 as a backup. I waited over one year for the part so I do not think M5 is good choose for me.

It is general knowledge that early M5 have this problematic shutter drum/roller. There was also the knowledge that Leica changed that defective drum somewhere along the 134xxx or 135xxx serial number. Too bad yours had this defect.

When buying the M5, it is best to buy the highest sn possible.

Hello Jerzy,

Is the shutter roller more like an M2-M4 roller? Or would it be more likely to be similar to a Leicaflex roller?

Given that the placement of shutter speed wheels, etc of M5 & Leicaflexes are more alike than M5 & M2-M4 are.

Best Regards,

Michael

Hi Michael, I do not know Leicaflex so deep, but M5 has practically  shutter from M4, and this is almost identical to M1—M3. The difference however is in the most upper disc, this is cam that determines speeds. Disc could be possibly taken over. As mentioned, not easy and straightforward, but possibly doable regards jerzy

I had same issue last summer. I tried to source spare parts and I found nothing. Leica does'nt have parts and repairers don't fix m5:s so they don't have either.

In the end we just created new part from aluminium and since then it has worked well.

Some more information as to how you did that I'm sure would be appreciated!

And I imagine that eventually the 3d printing boffins will get around to solving many problems with unavailable parts. So a doorstop may not always be a doorstop, pack it away carefully.

Especially when SLM Printing gets more common / the machines more affordable and people can print Metal at home, it will be easy to replicate Parts.

Over the weekend, when back at home I may post photos, not M5 but M3, it is more or less the same. As far as I know the whole shutter drum as shown is one part number ( with exception of the gear at the bottom) and was not intended to be repaired in the field. Tolerances for the components are very tight, parts which are fixed with the axis were assembled when heated, I believe, you will not be able to remove upper disc or rollers without a tool similar to the tool for removing bearings. And then you need to manufacture the broken roller, precise enough to ensure proper shutter function. Not easy, but doable if one have tools, machines, skills and time. Professional repair person, who is working for living would need to charge more than another working M5. Different story is with skilled DIY, they can afford to work for pleasure
