PeterD Posted May 25, 2022 Share #1161 Posted May 25, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Once upon a time, there was another Leica CL...that was innovative, designed by Leitz and manufactured by Minolta...another camera that was killed off rather un-necessarily. It came in at a point where other companies couldn't reach for price, quality and technology.

This is off-topic, but my experience of really cheap wristwatches is that they are accurate to a few minutes per month, if you are lucky. The strap will only last a few months, so it doesn't matter much. A $50 wristwatch will do better, of course, as long as it's not counterfeit. Accuracy is over-rated anyway. Most of us don't use celestial navigation. Those that do probably spend more than $10 on a timepiece.
lct Posted May 25, 2022 Share #1165 Posted May 25, 2022 I used to like beautiful watches until i found an ugly one that does what i want and i do sympathise with photogs obliged to work all day long with ugly functional M cameras . The only thing i've always disliked is relativism but no one cares and that's fine. Now we are all telling the truth here aren't we? The first time I saw a digital CL I thought: Oh the ugly duckling .

Some Rolex Daytonas need to be adjusted once every couple of weeks. That cost premium didn't go into the accuracy of its movement. But it's not something we buy because of how well it tells time. And, to the point of this thread, I don't buy cameras based on how they look, I buy them based on how they make everything else look. The example of the watch aesthetic, and many others examples, simply doesn't apply.

LocalHero1953 Posted May 26, 2022 Share #1169 Posted May 26, 2022 (edited) I bought a beautiful new gold Rolex once on Sanur Beach in Bali, for $5. It kept accurate time for at least 10 days, but then the little crown fell off and got tangled up with the hands, and the gold started to wear thin, so I binned it. Even in a modern watch I demand a certain floor level of functionality. Edited May 26, 2022 by LocalHero1953 1
Viv Posted May 26, 2022 Share #1170 Posted May 26, 2022 (edited) A street vendor in Pisa tried to sell me a "genuine" Rolex for 20 euro. He stopped when I showed him the Rolex on my wrist. I like my Leica cameras (including my CL) for the quality of their output, but also for their aesthetic and feel. Similar story with cars. One thing that really gets my goat with my CL, now mercury batteries are no longer available and the alternatives are to use an MR-9 regulator powered by a short lived and flaky Schottky diode or as I do and use an adapter which uses PR44 zinc air hearing aid batteries (very cheap about £1.50 for a card of 6 buttons). The problem is that the PR44 batteries only last about 3 months, used or not used. This is fine on my Leicaflex SL2 and M5, where the battery compartment is on the outside of the camera and therefore easily changed but on the CL, Leica made the stupid (IMHO) decision to put the battery inside the film chamber. So if the battery has died part of the way through a film, you are either reduced to manual exposure or to fiddling around in a darkened room in the middle of the night to change the battery without exposing the film. I know the "featurette" did not matter so much in the days of the mercury cell but you still had to change those regularly, since if they become exhausted inside a camera, they rapidly change into a really nasty toxic waste dump which will eat the insides of your camera. This has probably destroyed more 1960's to 80's cameras that wives de-cluttering the house. Wilson 2

JHPINLA Posted May 27, 2022 Share #1178 Posted May 27, 2022 Re the "death of CL" topic, I checked on Leica-USA site and the CL is still listed in body or kit options. The TL is, however, not there except pre-owned.

Those of us with a horse in the race (CL owners, for the pedants) should be grateful that @LUF Admin allows such vigorous discussion and expression of less than positive feelings towards Leica, at such length. It's been entertaining, to say the least, to read the divergent views of participants, and somewhat cathartic to express mine. I'm now content to shoot my CL into its sunset . . . 🙂 1

The issue was not discussion about Pixii but alternatives for APSC, and this is not a “double” thread for that!… There are other double threads of this same subjects; and it seems OK!!! So, if I get it, it is OK to talk about Canon, Nikon, sports cars and Rolex watches in this thread that I started about APSC cameras, but not OK to mention a camera with APSC and a 26 sensor!!!…. Surprising, indeed!….. This thread is becoming absolutely meaningless!…. People come just to show off their knowledge, their gear; and love to write essays instead of posting photos and speaking of the main subject! It seems LUF is catching the same virus as Leica AG!….
