Hi,

I love my M-A and have no use for an in-camera light meter. My wife, however, would rather have an in-camera meter than fiddle with an external one. She's been toying with the idea of getting a film M for herself for quite some time, especially after I had got mine. But she wanted an MP. And the problem was, she wanted it black. And we all know that black MPs are rarer than hens' teeth these days. Silver MPs do turn up from time to time, but black ones... never. There are long waiting lists, and waiting times seem to be on the order of months if you're lucky, or over a year if you aren't.

One night, one week ago, she could not sleep. She reached for her iPad and started watching YouTube. A video about Leicas, no less. This triggered her to go to the Leica Shop Austria web site to look at a black MP again. Not expecting to find it in stock, mind you. She knew the chances of that happening were nil. She was just curious about one little detail and wanted to take a look at the pictures again.
But what do you know? The add-to-cart button was active. She said to herself: "this must be a mistake; I'm sure I'll get an error if I press it". But no, no error, the item was added to the cart.
"Hmmm", she thought, "this is strange. It will probably fail at the next step".
But no, it asked for the delivery address. She had no plans whatsoever of buying the camera, but the fact that she was able to reach this point intrigued her. She was getting quite curious as to how far she could get before being told that the item wasn't actually available. So she entered the address, expecting to receive a "sorry, out of stock" error at the next step.
But no, the next step was asking for credit card details.
Now, this was getting really interesting. Surely they wouldn't ask for a credit card if the item were not deliverable, would they? She seemed to have reached the point of no return. Should she actually buy the camera?
Part of her was thinking: "it's a magnificent camera, but it it wise to spend so much money on something that won't take better pictures than my other cameras, of which I've got plenty?"
Another part of her was thinking: "this may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. This camera is extremely hard to find. I may not have this chance again."
In the end she said to herself: "oh, what the hell, we only live once" and entered her credit card details.
And surprise! No error this time either. Just a thank you note saying that the order was complete and will be delivered soon.

It arrived yesterday.

It's absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you. 🍺

I noticed that the sound of the shutter is more muted than it is in my M-A. I thought the M-A was silent, but this one is even more. And, as a 75mm lens user, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it has normal, useable frame lines for 75mm, as opposed to those sorry, barely visible corners in the M-A. This, however, will be wasted on my wife, who is a wide angle person. She's planning to get a 28mm for it.

One thing I couldn't figure out was how to set the film speed manually. There is, of course, the wheel on the back, but there's also a DX sensor. And there's no DX setting on the wheel, like there was on the M7. Does this mean that the wheel setting will only be used if the DX can't be read, otherwise the DX will always take precedence? She often uses Kodak P3200, which she exposes at various EIs, but almost never at 3200. She'll have to make the camera ignore the DX somehow.

There is no dx that I know of on the MP; you simply set the desired speed on the iso dial

Yes, there is. There are DX contacts under the back door, which are also mentioned in the manual.

You're right, it was only after posting the above message that I realized they weren't DX sensors. The DX sensors should be inside the space where the film cassette goes. And there aren't any in there. My mistake. 😊

I really hope this is a sign that they've done another production run and I'll be getting mine relatively soon. Every few days I get the urge to cancel my order and buy an SL2-S. Not really because I want one, but because I want a new toy to play with. :)

Vlad, mind if I ask the production date on yours?

Looks like it. A dealer here in Melbourne also got one about two weeks ago. Sold immediately.

Every time I see a BP MP in stock at leicacamerausa.com online shop - last time it was in the beginning of January - I am thinking what a beautiful piece of jewelry it is. Luckily my wife uses an iPhone to take pictures :) Congrats, Vlad!

Indeed, there's a date on the label. February 3, 2022.
