Shanil Posted January 11, 2022 Share #1 Posted January 11, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey! Can anyone recommend cheap compact flashes for the M6 TTL? The flash doesn't need to have TTL, it's not going to be used often just when at family gatherings and I want to snap a few memories in a point and shoot fashion (without having to buy a p&s) I've heard conflicting stories of frying electronics so that's why I'm asking again to put my mind at ease. Cheers!

drew.saunders Posted January 11, 2022 Share #2 Posted January 11, 2022 (edited) I used to use a Metz 20BC-6, and it worked on my M6TTL, but I then I got a Leica SF20, which is a better flash, and it does TTL. It isn’t cheap. There are probably plenty of good used Metz flashes from ~20 years ago that would work well. If you get an older Metz with an SCA TTL module for Leica, get the 3502 or 3501 Mod 1, not the original 3501, which had problems with the M6 TTL. sandro Posted January 12, 2022 Share #3 Posted January 12, 2022 The Leica SF20 isn't cheap indeed, but it works very well. I bought mine many years ago new, and I still use it on my M6 TTL and the older M6, with very nice results. There are many other, older flashes that are much cheaper. On my older M4 and M4-P is sometimes use a Metz Mecablitz 32CT3 or the Vivitar 283. Lex

rramesh Posted January 12, 2022 Share #5 Posted January 12, 2022 Nissin i40 (Nikon mount). Identical to, but a lot cheaper than the Leica SF40. Though no TTL.
LocalHero1953 Posted January 12, 2022 Share #6 Posted January 12, 2022 (edited) No need for anything Leica-specific unless you want the red dot. With my M9 and M240 I used to use several of the Nikon SB-28, which was readily available at a good price on ebay. Solidly built, easily managed, compact, powerful. It has both M and A modes, which are all you need. Edited January 12, 2022 by LocalHero1953
Fotoklaus Posted January 12, 2022 Share #7 Posted January 12, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sunpak PF20, Nikon SB30, Nikon SB22, Metz 20 C-2, Metz 20- BC6, Metz 30 BCT, Minolta Auto 200x Perhaps a Metz 32 Ct3 will also work in TTL- Mode with a dedicated Leica- SCA-351 Adapter? Otherwise it will also work in Auto almost perfect.

Danner Posted January 13, 2022 Share #9 Posted January 13, 2022 Good get, the Metz (USA name) products I have owned have all stood the test of time.
jonnyboy Posted January 14, 2022 Share #10 Posted January 14, 2022 The Fujifilm EF-X20 is a great choice (I prefer it to the Leica SF-20 which makes the whole body really unbalanced!). I'm on the lookout for a FlashQ II by LightPix which I heard good thoughts on digitals - I'm wondering how does it perform with analog?! If it does perform at all (I dont see why not). It does function as a wireless too which is a bonus...also quite cheap.

jaapv Posted May 13, 2024 Share #13 Posted May 13, 2024 Just about any classic flash will lol do. My personal favourite unisex the Metz Mecablt 32 CR 7 as the shape matches the camera. the M6 does not have any flash contacts except sync so any SCA adapter will do. If you also have a Leica with TTL control you need an 351 or 343 Examples: https://www.ebay.de/p/110619621?iid=391545721567

Various flagship Nikon flashes from the late film / early digital era would be fine (a bit bigger but higher end than the 36 C-2), including the SB-28 mentioned above and the similar SB-28DX or the later SB-80DX or even the SB-800 (though the last one's compatibility with the later Nikon dSLRs generally make it more expensive for extra features you don't need on a Leica). All of these have manual mode and a non-TTL auto mode that uses a sensor on the flash itself, which is as much automation as you can use on an M6 Classic or Reissue. SanDiegoMike Posted May 23, 2024 Share #15 Posted May 23, 2024 I read somewhere that a Panasonic 360 flash was compatible with Leica cameras, but I have never owned one so I can't verify that. Does anyone have any experience with that combination?

Does anyone have any experience with that combination? The DMW-FL360 has a TTL mode that I think will only work with old Leica digitals that were basically rebadged Panasonics, not the M series. However, it also has an auto mode that uses the flash unit's built-in sensor, as well as a manual mode. Both these modes will work with most cameras from most manufacturers.
