Hi James,

interesting thoughts here. Last year, few months in the pandemic I decided to do more analog again and got a 4x5" Linhof Master Technika which I really enjoy shooting. But I'm not always in the mood to carry a 4x5".

Today, Dec 3rd I placed an order for a M-A, can't wait to get it into my hands.

My process with 4x5" is that I shoot mostly Kodak Portra 160 and 400, have the film developed by a lab and then camera-scan the film.

For the M-A, I have a pack of Silbersalz35 in the fridge already. Silbersalz develops and scans the film.

Going forward, we (my wife and myself) will mostly re-vitalize our darkroom again.

Looking forward to sharing some experience with the M-A here.

Best Regards and have a nice weekend,

Ralf

Hello Ralf,

How long is the scheduled waiting time for your M-A ?

Some of M-A lovers in this thread:

For me M-A is such a simple M to use and love.

As said often, finding this M new in our days is kind of miracle.

Hi Arnaud,

i was lucky, there was one M-A that made it into the Leica Store in Frankfurt this week. So I will pick up mine sometime next week. I also asked for the MP as I was a bit on and off between M-A and MP. The fact that the MP will not be available before Feb/Mar next year simplified my decision 😂

Which also gives us a fair idea of Leica's "production schedule" for analog Ms. Batches 2-3 times a year.

As a halfway house suggestion I've recently been using Adox CMS20 II with my MP and Nikon F3. As a fellow LF user but mostly MF even in 35mm CMS20 II gives close to MF quality by using the recommended Adotech developer. Yes it does need to be rated at between 3 ISO and 12 ISO (I found the 6 ISO spot best), but as a LF user I know you have a tripod.

I never quite achieved the success I wanted with CMS20, but admittedly I was sending it out for a custom process (even if correctly using Adotech) so I was never in full control of the process and it’s hard to tell quite what went on. The end result (for me) was a very narrow tonal range, and images that were rather “plastic” looking once drum scanned because it was so utterly grain free that it lost any bite. I’m sure others have had more success than me though.

For a full tonal range it does need to be exposed between 3 and 12 ISO, and any old developer won't work, the Adotech is very good and I processed the old CMS20 with 510 Pyro semi-stand for a full tonal range. There should be only very, very gentle agitation or you'd get high contrast, barely swishing the developer around for a few seconds every minute, and this is something the lab my not have appreciated. And the other consideration is if the lab fixed your negatives for any longer than 1 minute, more than that and the image starts to bleach, and the average fix time of 5 minutes would be a disaster. I fix for 45 seconds.

I have five rolls of Adox CMS20 II sitting in the refigerator waiting for the weather to clear and have several sunny days. I also have the Adotech IV developer to insure the best results. There are several videos on the best practices for exposing and developing the film for best results. It's good to see someone using it successfully.
