fotografr Posted August 14, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) All shot at a local boxing club, M6, 75 lux, Tri-X pushed to 1600. Pretty tough lighting situation. Top to bottom: Boxers, boxing coach, young boxing student.
Advertisement Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Hi fotografr, Take a look here Boxing Club. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted August 14, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 14, 2006 Brent - #2 & #3 are superb. 2 (coach) is a warm, telling environmental protrait, well composed, exposed and with nice textures and focus. 3 (student) has all those qualities, plus it is surprisingly intimate. 1 I find to be good at documenting the moment (and the fellow on the right seems tentative), but not in the same league as the other two. semrich Posted August 14, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 14, 2006 Brent, They are all beautiful, each has intimacy and character in the context of the great out of focus surroundings, Richard
albertwang Posted August 14, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 14, 2006 Number 1 indeed needs to be more visceral. Like a thrown punch or flying broken teeth to show off the tude of boxing.
robert_parker Posted August 14, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 14, 2006 Brent I really like the second one for the catchlight in the eyes and the fascinating subject also for the fact that the texture is in the white sweater in difficult lighting. I'm not over keen on the first and tend to agree that maybe a blow being landed would maybe have met our (probably over traditional) expectations of a boxing photograph a little more!! I like the third one too and the look of wrapt attention, only thing is being a lover of cropping I really would have considered cropping a little higher up the midriff to focus the attention more on the face and hands. That second one really is a traffic stopper, though - there's a whole weath of ideas there and I love the assymetric pose. As ever, really neat portraits. vic vic Posted August 14, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 14, 2006 brent - fantastic ... i love all the pictures. the third is specially amazing because of what seems to be contrast - such a gentel face expression and tough sport like boxing. in short - great
earleygallery Posted August 14, 2006 Share #7 Posted August 14, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Excellent series - but they should be in the Sport & Leisure forum (there's another thread running about the lack of 'sports' photos). The guy in the 3rd shot looks more likely to be a ballet dancer than a boxer, but there's a lot in common with both when you think about it. Wonder how long before he's sporting a 'boxers' nose? jmr Posted August 14, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 14, 2006 Brent, love the framing on the third shot. The narrow format, losing the elbows, adds a touch of tension to an already sensitive image. Very nice.
lambroving Posted August 15, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 15, 2006 Brent, Particularly like the offset portrait (#2). All three are good, but I'm shocked at how good this Tri-X looks at 1600. You must have a secret formula. Either that ot you did a lot of noise-reduction. Which? And what f-stop did you use? Surely not f1.4? Thanks very much for posting. abrewer Posted August 15, 2006 Share #10 Posted August 15, 2006 Looking good Brent! It's great to see sporting shots that focus on the people rather than the sport. Thanks for sharing. Allan
fotografr Posted August 15, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted August 15, 2006 William--No secret formula here. I used Acufine developer. The film is actually pretty darn grainy. I didn't use any noise reduction, but for some reason when I brought the images into the "Save For Web" window, the grain smoothed out considerably--probably due to the sharpness decline. James--I did consider posting this in Sports & Leisure, but decided on the People category because I thought the images (at least, 2 & 3) were more about the individuals than the sport itself. I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. Thanks much. Cheers,

mgcd Posted August 16, 2006 Share #13 Posted August 16, 2006 Brent - I like the whole series. The images works very well here. The first image is very effective as it plays with the anticipation of the action and of the boxers punches connecting with the opponent. Great timing. The second and third image are excellent. The last one also gave me the impression of a ballet dancer. Very nicely done. Cheers,
