Aquilasfx Posted October 7, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 7, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, at the end I bought a CLA'd M6 with 2 years of warranty from the reseller. I am thinking at what lens to buy for my new camera. Usually with contax G2 my most used lens is the 35mm f2 planar. I want a compact 35mm lens with a focus tab, I will use this camera with BW (mostly HP5+ films) and color (less). These the types of shoot that I would like to take: street, architecture, and (color) nightphotography. I really like to use tiffen black pro mist 1/4 for soften hard lights. Can you suggest something?

Danner Posted October 7, 2021 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2021 (edited) My favorite is the 35mm Summicron version 4 (11310). Just a fantastic lens, especially in film. Welcome, dear visitor! a.noctilux Posted October 7, 2021 Share #5 Posted October 7, 2021 (edited) @Aquilasfx The results from this lens can be seen here, this thread (link) I'm fan of 35mm Summicron IV for decades *. Always have one since very long. At one time I had a lot of them Canada or Wetzlar made, to have kind of statistics (as said so often ! ). My conclusion as long time user is this is a very good lens with some flaws ** (as usual) : - Wetzlar made lens is more robust, never found one needing repair - Canadian lens is lighter but may break if used without care (even with care in my case), like mounting/unmounting using the hood for example - the net results are the same in lenses that I used, * before discovering Summarit-M 2.5/35 **still have one "Wetzlar" KOB, and one "Made in Canada", nothing to complain, really they do what they were created for, nice images with time to time some flaws as most of lenses at any price seen here ... M6 with 0.85 finder is a must to use this nice 2/35mm Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! andrew01 Posted October 7, 2021 Share #6 Posted October 7, 2021 I would love one of those KOBs but the going rate seems to be about €1800. For a third of the money the Voigtlander Ultron mkII seems to be a good choice. It is on my shopping list.

Mute-on Posted October 8, 2021 Share #8 Posted October 8, 2021 Honestly, basically any Leica made M mount 35mm lens will be excellent with black and white film. For colour film, some argue that more modern lenses such as Summicron IV and ASPH, Summarit, ASPH Summilux perform better. Really depends on what you expect and prefer. At a budget under, say, $1,500, I would go for Summaron 35/2.8, then Summarit 2.5/2.4, then Summicron II or III. I have the Summaron which is more than adequate on colour film for my purposes. Naturally YMMV. Good luck.
Ko.Fe. Posted October 8, 2021 Share #9 Posted October 8, 2021 (edited) Summarit-M 35 2.5 beats them all on bw darkroom prints. It has super-micro contrast. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Don't know how it is for architecture. It does have distortions, sometimes. It is lens designed for digital after all and accidentally is not sterile at all on dr bw prints. Good for color film as well. Handling (focus, aperture) is better than ELC and older Wetzlar. oldwino Posted October 8, 2021 Share #10 Posted October 8, 2021 Ultron or Summarit. Both great lenses.
bags27 Posted October 8, 2021 Share #11 Posted October 8, 2021 (edited) We can and do drive ourselves crazy pixel peeping with digital. But a "return" to film is a return to ease and latitude. I generally shoot B&W a stop under box speed and develop it for 20% shorter. I generally shoot color a stop over and develop as instructed. But then again, sometimes I do other stuff. I refuse to take notes, so each roll is a bit unpredictable. Have fun! (And buy a Holga, too--it will lighten the burden of perfection). junix Posted October 8, 2021 Share #12 Posted October 8, 2021 As always, it all depends on your budget, how much you’re willing to spend will greatly influence what will people suggest. The Summarit 35mm is amazing (Leica) value for money, I almost bought a new one a couple of months ago. For film photography.. I have a late Silver Chrome 35mm Summicron V4 glued to my M-A. Honestly, bokeh is just average (KOB??) but I really like how this lens draws, and I especially like it on film.

What is the main advantage for shooting like this? I suppose the negatives turn out really thin and grainy this way.

That's going to reduce grain somewhat and tame contrast a bit too.
Aquilasfx Posted October 8, 2021 Author Share #15 Posted October 8, 2021 (edited) For analog night photography (color and BW eventually), how do they perform? As distortion and long exposure for example, for 30% of my pics I do long exposures on tripod. Edited October 8, 2021 by Aquilasfx
ktmrider2 Posted October 8, 2021 Share #16 Posted October 8, 2021 (edited) Night photography with film? Why not the fastest 35 made? Granted it is not a Leitz made lens but the latest version of the 35 f1.2 Nokton is outstanding and does not cost an arm and leg. But it. is not. compact so that might be a consideration. For compact, you cannot beat the 35f2.8. C.-Biogon from Zeiss but not the fastest 35 on the market by a long shot (but possibly the sharpest). Of course, you. could do as I did, buy both and still have money left over compared to a Leica 35. Or the new 35f2 APO from Voightlander but you may not notice its performance on a film camera. And both Zeiss and Voightlander make several other 35mm lenses, each having various strengths and weaknesses just as the Leitz manufactured models do. Good luck with the hunt. jukka Posted October 8, 2021 Share #20 Posted October 8, 2021 Permanently attached to my M7 is the Minolta Rokkor 40/2, which I had filed to bring the 35mm frame lines. Couldn't be happier; its tiny, cheap, has a focus tab, and renders nicely. Even if I would win the lottery, I would find it hard to justify buying a cron or a lux. Sure, someday this will happen, I flirt with the idea daily, but as said, it's just sooo difficult to justify.
