wizard Posted October 6, 2021 Share #4 Posted October 6, 2021 You can tell by the size of the steering wheel that this car does not have power steering. Nice shot and great car!
stuny Posted October 6, 2021 Share #5 Posted October 6, 2021 The 190 SL was a handsome and civilized car for its time, and as Michael points out a little underpowered - partly due to expectations based on its big brother - the 300 SL Lovely photo

At the time of its production from 1955-63, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL with 104 hp out of 1.9 l displacement was one of the fastest sports cars in Germany. Many roads had been destroyed during World War II and the expansion of the highways was in its planning stage. The convertible, in particular, was more suitable for strolling down avenues than for racing on the Nürburgring. How true. I also feel this car was made to have an enjoyable stroll instead of a speedy one. This convertible version gave me the feeling of a peaceful drive in the country side. stuny Posted October 11, 2021 Share #9 Posted October 11, 2021 I believe they all came only as convertibles, though one could order them with a removable hardtop to go along with the folding top.

Yes, just like any SL Mercedes except for the 300 SL (which came in gullwing and convertible style) and the most recent two iterations which had a retractable hardtop. Rona!d Posted December 6, 2021 Share #11 Posted December 6, 2021 At least it was faster than a Karmann Ghia 😉 Mercedes hoped it could reach 190 km/h top but was lucky if it reached 170 km/h. It was a car made because Max Hofman(n) wanted it for the US (along with the 300 SL). Not many on the road in Germany, only in movies and some celebrities/industrial magnat wifes and a wellknown red light lady. Not every dealer workshop could set up the engine correctly. It was much more expensive than a standard Porsche in Germany. It was much cheaper in the US compared to Germany.
Rona!d Posted December 6, 2021 Share #12 Posted December 6, 2021 Three basic versions made aside an early racing version with only a small flyscreen. 1) Roadster with softtop 2) Coupe with detachable hardtop (no softtop and no box for a softtop) 3) Coupe with a detachable hardtop and a softtop
