This is a photo of a very rare white female roe deer (albino). Taken today in Tyrol / Austria with SL2-S, 600mm, f6.3, 1/200 sec, ISO 800, edited with LR and cropped (Click on image for better result).

I have a question about your experience with the OIS on the Sigma 150-600. With my lens, the autofocus point always moves back and forth a little with the OIS switched on and the image in the EVF trembles with my arms. With my other lenses, on the other hand, the viewfinder image is relatively calm when the OIS is switched on. I have a feeling that some images are getting blurry due to the OIS. From the tripod with the OIS switched off, I get very sharp images. Do you have a similar experience?

Which shutter speed is the longest that you have used to get sharp images handheld? My experience is that you should not use any shutter speed longer than 1/125 or maybe 1/60 of a second.

Thanks, Marco

There is some territorial stuff going on between this male and another.  I managed to get both of them in one frame (see next image) but depth of field is sadly shallow and they are blindingly fast in the air.

What kind of bag are you using to carry the SL2 with this lens attached?

Below my first picture taken with the lens this morning. Rare exotic bird 🙂 with SL2-S, 600mm, f/6.3, 1/250"; 100% crop

I´m owner of the lens since last week. I´m pretty impressed by the quality. There are two bodies to be potentially used with the lens:

  • S1R
  • SL2-S

My initial idea was to the use the lens with the Panasonic to potentially get some extra reach by the higher pixel counts, but so far the image quality with the SL2-S appears to be better. These are my findings and questions:

  • The mechanical shutter of the S1R blurs the pictures (thanks to the forum to bring this to my attention). The shutter of the SL2-S seems to produce less impact. Can anyone confirm this?
If you use the electronic shutter on the S1R, which one do you use: EFC or electronic?

  • At ISO 100, there is a little more resolution visible on the S1R (perfect condition: sturdy tripod, EFC, manual focus, target not moving, no wind......). At ISO 1600 the SL2-S shows more details, especially in low contrast parts of the subject. The SL2-S is okay up to ISO 6400 (similar result as the S1R at ISO 1600)
Are there any users having access to both resolutions? (SL2 or S1R versus SL2-S). Which do you use?

  • The SL2-S seems to nail the focus a bit better than the S1R. Are high pixel counts negative for the auto focus performance?

Thanks for your comments

Andreas

Great images Andreas! I use this lens extensively on both the SL2 & SL2-S, the lens has exceeded my expectations. I discovered some time ago that you have to use the electronic shutter with all teles & zooms, since then no issues whatsoever. I had an S1R as soon as it was launched a couple of years ago & sold it after a few months.       I had a number of gripes, one of them being that I wasn't able to nail focus precisely. I flagged the issue on the Forum at the time.

Hi everyone, I have recently purchased the sigma 150-600mm lens and although being heavy, I am overall very pleased with the quality of the pictures. I have not had much success with the AF performance with birds in flight but I have plenty of settings to try and adjust and hopefully I will have a better hit rate.
This is a picture of a Grey Heron taken at 600 mm handheld.
