johntobias Posted July 7, 2021 Share #3 Posted July 7, 2021 Well this pushed me...just sold my Nik D5 and replacing it with an SL2 I have a bunch of M lenses and may even find the SL2 obviates the need for my M10 so may move that for a decent zoom , 24-90 or similar (My MP will need to be prised from my cold dead lifeless hand as it is such a joy to use and hold and is my 'forever' camera) question is what decent long lenses are available for the L mount...(i've Nikkor 200-500 for birds and a nikkor 300 f2.8 for other stuff...how easy are they to adapt?) probably worth keeping these as they are relatively inexpensive and I still shoot an F5 film nikon. oh dilemmas ....fun though! so yes...a £350 free adapter is going to end up costing abot 20x that ! ha ...you only live once and as I say, you might as well get hanged for stealing a sheep as a lamb !!
FrozenInTime Posted July 7, 2021 Share #4 Posted July 7, 2021 Whether the offer is an indication of slow SL2/SL2-S body sales or slow SL lens sales , it seems they have noticed much more user activity with M lenses : a good move bundling the adapter. My SL2-S has never seen, and may never see a SL lens; the M adapter as been on it since day one. On the other hand my CL gets use with both M lenses and the compact TL lenses. …. now about that M with integrated EVF body; it would be good to see the focus cam movement being digitized and driving focus assist functions.

Funny that this is the complete opposite for me. I tried my M lenses on the SL2-S and compared against native L-mount lenses and never looked back. I’ll keep using M lenses on my M bodies but I’ll stick to L-mount lenses on the SL2-S. The image quality is a whole new level with the APO Summicron SL and even native Sigma DN DG primes.

I can see using M glass because of the size or because you prefer manual focusing, but from an ultimate image quality standpoint, the SL glass completely crushes M glass. I bought on SL lens, 2/75, and I don’t see me buying another. Great lens, just to big. my SL and soon to arrive SL2 will be my perfect M camera.

Yeah, the only use case I personally see for M lenses on SL body is for 75/90/135mm M-primes where the equivalent SL option is much bigger but the image quality from the M-prime would be still quite decent. The drawback is that at those focal lengths, proper focus would be trickier and more important, and this is where auto-focus would be of benefit. The few exceptions beyond the 70/90/135mm would be the noctiluxes because it’s even harder to focus accurately (and quickily) with a rangefinder. Some could argue that it’d be worth putting a APO 35mm-M because it does genuinely work well on the SL and because of size/weight but the weight argument really gets diluted once you factor in the fact that you need to add a 200g M-Adapter L on top of the 300g APO-35-M. Now you’re at 500g and just 200g shy of the even slightly better, and autofocusing, and half-the-price APO-35-SL. johntobias Posted July 8, 2021 Share #9 Posted July 8, 2021 How well do you think my WATE will work...(SL2 arrives at the weekend but i'm an impatient chap !) Also, one of my all-time sharpest lenses is a Nikkor 105mm macro, I think I'll try that on the SL2 also...should be reasonable for close-up stuff
hamey Posted July 8, 2021 Share #10 Posted July 8, 2021 There we go again, another promotion those poor R Lens users miss out again, no free R to SL adapter for them. My Local Leica store is having some difficulties in selling the Leica SL system, probably to pricy for most people. If Leica cannot convince a dedicated user like me to buy into the SL system what hope have they got in future. Still own the 35-70mmf4 21-35mm 28-90mm 50mmf2 90mmf2 80-200mm and the 180mm2.8 plus 2 M lenses 35mmf2 and the 50mm asph 1.4. Welcome, dear visitor! The obvious use case is people who want manual focus! There is a level of control that you just can't achieve with AF, so why not use the very best manual focus lenses ever made? On top of that, many M lenses have a rendering that is completely different from SL lenses. It's not "better" or "worse", it's just a different look. There must be a reason why many cinematographers choose vintage Leica glass, even when they have access to ultra-expensive cine glass. You need to match your tools to your narrative. 23 hours ago, FrozenInTime said: Whether the offer is an indication of slow SL2/SL2-S body sales or slow SL lens sales , it seems they have noticed much more user activity with M lenses : a good move bundling the adapter. Leica sent-out a customer survey in the Spring. They probably saw that there are a few M photographers who don't own an SL camera yet. The M11 won't be announced for a while, so why not try to sell them something else?
6bit Posted July 8, 2021 Share #12 Posted July 8, 2021 I have two M10 bodies. I’ve probably purchased my last M body. I love the M form factor but want an EVF. The SL is now my compromise, and not a bad one at that!

I totally agree with you on this. Where I think my perspective is different is that, if the above is the goal, then use an M body. The ergonomics are way better than an SL for this type of use. I see your point, but the M system doesn't work well for many people. Not everybody is into rangefinders. IBIS, integrated EVF and video are not available on a M either.

The SL2s is 4500€, the cheapest Leica you can get brand new. I think the price is high, but manageable. Both Sigma and Panasonic lenses are very good and start at 400€. By comparison the M10R is almost twice the price But the SL has to compete internally with the Panasonics and also with Canon, Nikon and Sony, that's why it doesn't sell well
2M6TTLs Posted July 10, 2021 Share #16 Posted July 10, 2021 If you are someone like me with lots of M lenses that you love and want to keep using, but want all the benefits of a bigger and more reliable viewfinder, the weather sealing and much more versatility, this is a great promotion and you can be up and running right after purchase until you add an AF lens at a later date.I don't care that the new AF lenses are 'better' because I'm already more than happy with the quality from the M glass and I love how the small size and weight of them balances on an SL body... Leica should have done this a long time ago.Now that they have, I'm in - and since I think the M lenses and 24MP will be a good match, the SL2s is looking very good indeed.

So if that's the case, are they going through with the same issue. Back in the days when my beloved R system was still alive, Leica wouldn't allow any other manufacturer to make any lenses for the R system and if My memory serves me right Leica took Sigma to court for trying to do it, some deal was agreed in court, now Sigma is part of the Leica alliance. It's obvious that Leica doesn't want to make the same mistake as it did with the R system. Back to the promotion, as I have listed my Leica lens collection in my post above, having seven R lenses and just two M lenses, why should I bother with This promotion, giving me a free L to M adapter if I purchase an SL/2........ it's no benefit to me with just two M lenses. Remember, those of us that still have a collection of R lenses can still use other mirrorless alternatives so whatever brand I choose I still need an Adapter to couple my lenses to it and that includes the Leica SL system, so giving me a 1200 Dollar R to SL adapter could be attractive. I have no interest in buying any more M lenses or M bodies. So If Leica can entice me with their (R) EVOLUTION and come back to Leica SL system I might considered it. So if Leica talks turkey, I might come to dinner. cheers.
