moghul Posted June 25, 2021 Share #1 Posted June 25, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I purchased a new Leica MP and have been using it now for about 4 months. I was reloading some film and noticed the paint in the two red dots on the rewind knob had leaked. Has anyone every encountered a similar issue? Welcome, dear visitor! It’s a shame I experienced it after a few months in comparison to an older lens but I guess these things don’t follow a timeline of when to happen. Thanks for sharing! pgk Posted June 25, 2021 Share #5 Posted June 25, 2021 Its a problem with hand painting stuff. I'm sure that automated systems are much more precise. Its the price you pay for artisanal finishing I'm afraid.

Do you use aftersave, insect repellent, sun screen, etc.? All these products can affect paint, less so the black of the camera but the types of paint they use for infill.

Looks a little different @moghul Did your dots look different at the beginning compared to today? Some "leaking" might be normal from the beginning due to the painting process? Looks a little different @moghul Did your dots look different at the beginning compared to today? Some "leaking" might be normal from the beginning due to the painting process? That’s exactly what happened to mine. Out the box it was fine and then eventually that happened. I ended up scratching off the excess paint with my fingernail so it looks more circular. I guess I’m not the only one. Thanks for sharing this!
250swb Posted June 25, 2021 Share #11 Posted June 25, 2021 Just a thought, we are assuming it's paint, maybe Leica have moved to using wax, so is heat simply melting it?

Helge Posted June 25, 2021 Share #13 Posted June 25, 2021 I think, this is very rare, I never heard about it before. The paint is dry, once the camera has been delivered to you, so it is more than unlikely that it is able to move after 4 months. The suspicion @250swbdid ask about (later contact to any chemicals like a solvent) seems to be a lot more likely.

Wax would probably come off too easy. vor 5 Minuten schrieb moghul: This would make sense because when I scratched off the residue it came off fairly easy and didn’t scratch off like it was paint If you dissolved the paint somehow, this would also work, since the red paint moved on top of the black one. I would contact customer service if I would be in your place.

Danner Posted June 25, 2021 Share #16 Posted June 25, 2021 My guess is epoxy paint mixed with insufficient hardener.
Helge Posted June 25, 2021 Share #17 Posted June 25, 2021 This is a theoretical possibility, but nobody is mixing this type of paint components in a manufacturing plant, so the paint would have been delivered to Leica that way. I‘m still in favor of any solvent from fingers or bag. Another theoretical possibility would be shellac, however also unlikely, probably too difficult to handle in production. otto.f Posted June 25, 2021 Share #18 Posted June 25, 2021 I wonder if HCB would have been lying awake about something like this (although I’m convinced that having a good feeling with your camera is important for your results).
