I still cannot understand that the company that gave us the  "Leica Gun Rifle", the "Trombone" Telyts, the Televit, the Apo-Telyts, the APO-Telyt Modular system (still the best tele system ever built), the last iterations of the R zooms and as a sort of coda the SL 90-280 -I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple of things-, now seems to have abandoned any focal length beyond 135...

On re-reading this post, I feel it necessary to point out that the name 'Leica' conceals the fact that you are talking about two very different companies in two different periods of time.

This is 70mm followed by a 1/4 cropped shot at 300mm of a concrete pour for a parking garage floor.

LeicaS2,

Great shot of Vee Jay's pump;) Construction scenes always make for interesting shots--especially in B&W.  Is that in Clayton?  Couldn't help but smile when I saw your moon shot. I was involved in both the BJC and Children's bed towers in the background:). You just don't see very many pics from STL out there on these forums.

Cheers!

This is a great post and answers!  I am looking for a stabilized lens for an upcoming (later 2022, I hope) trip to South Africa on safari to use with my TL2.  (Fully immunized retired Immunologist, lets not deviate into the pandemic issues.)  This thread has answered my questions without getting off-track as many seem to do.  My hat is off to all the contributors!

I'm also supposed to go this coming September 2022 (after postponing 2021 trip).  I'm thinking about the new Sigma 150-600 option for L mount.

You might be find this thread to be of interest:

Just came back to this thread and changed my option a bit.

I prefer the 55-135 size, but in the end its two different lenses.

The 55-135 more as an allround short telephote lens, ideal for kids, portraits, some landscape etc.

The 70-300 has more than double reach and OIS. OIS also stabilizes the viewfinder image, which helps framing at longer focal lengths. With its focal lengths its also usable for some wildlife, sports a longer distances, birds etc.

The 55-135 due to its low weight is not so easy to hold stable in my experience.

And the 70300 is relativly light and handles still ok on the CL IMO.

It always comes down to personal experience and regular subject matter. I have both and the prefer the shorter lens, as you call it. When and how often do you shoot with your 450mm lens on your CL?

maybe the coming vacation in greece to take images of wing surfing, sea turtles, kids in the water. 135mm is kind of short for such things.

I still believe its a big mistake to not continue the CL system. I just decided to bring my CL for vacation and leave SL2-S at home.
