wlaidlaw Posted April 23, 2021 Share #1 Posted April 23, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I came across this horror on eBay, described as a" Kriegsmarine Leica". https://tinyurl.com/uhwws6dr I think this might be the least convincing fake I have ever come across. I would guess it originated as a Zorki S or maybe 2S. It would be laughable if it was not a bit sad. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Hi wlaidlaw, Take a look here Is this the worst fake "Leica" you have ever seen?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
nitroplait Posted April 23, 2021 Share #2 Posted April 23, 2021 Those fakes, even when declared as such, bothers me. I always report them, but it probably doesn't help. The object is designed to deceive someone and therefore they support a counterfeit culture. Not that I can't laugh at some of the things that comes up, but they were not made for laughing but to dishonestly adding value to an object of lesser value. Stuart Richardson Posted April 23, 2021 Share #3 Posted April 23, 2021 Fakeness aside, it is sad and disgusting that there is additional collector value for Nazi memorabilia.

Wilson "Leica II Kriegsmarine Silver Camera lens Leitz Elmar (Fed Zorki copy)"... with the copy the master is honoured, as the Chinese say ... : )
Anbaric Posted April 23, 2021 Share #5 Posted April 23, 2021 I find the market for these difficult to understand. The description says (not very accurately) it's a 'Fed Zorki copy', so the buyer at least knows they aren't getting a Leica if they can read. The price is much higher than an undefaced Zorki, so purely as a camera it's no bargain. It doesn't look remotely like a real Leica, let alone a Leica with genuine naval engravings, so it has no value as a prop or replica even at a cursory glance. In standard chrome it doesn't have the bling value of those polished brass versions. Without the swastika that the most tasteless examples have it's not even one for the nazi fetishists. So who is it for? Do people collect these things as 'folk art'?

Anbaric Posted April 23, 2021 Share #7 Posted April 23, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) One day someone is going to put a 'Berlin Olympics 1936' engraving on a Zenit or something. Though that would be no more ridiculous than its appearance here:

On a recent US talk show, a member of the audience asked why Windsor castle was built so near to Heathrow Airport. The answer of course, was that William the Conqueror had noise cancelling headphones and so he didn't care. Wilson 2

I imagine the conversation at the production company went something like this: 'What did they use before the iPhone?' 'Blueberry or something? Dad used to go on about them.' 'No, before that! Film cameras, right? Like Kai the hipster in Accounts?' 'Oh yeah, analogue, man. Did I tell you about my collection of 45rpm vinyls...' 'We're on a deadline here! Just go on ebay and buy half a dozen.' 'Which ones?' 'Who cares? They're all pretty much the same, aren't they?' 1

Well, if they didn't think that all film cameras look the same, it must have been an intern trolling them by picking out a camera half a century out of place from the props cupboard. Excellent exhibition, though.

Wilson, have you ever visited the tourist traps on Arbat Street in Moscow? In one of them a 'salesperson' tried to convince me that I should buy a 'vintage Leica' for €200, even though I had a Leica around my neck and I told him that I had 40 more at home. I'm sure that I could have got the price down to less than €100, but I still would not have been interested. A view of the chap's shop window is below. When I got to St Petersburg I found a wonderful shop off Nevsky Prospekt called Lubitel where I was able to buy some wonderful genuine Russian equipment. It was run by a young fellow who really knew his Russian equipment. He knew all of the factories by their markings and he could tell what year a lens was manufactured and he was correct on both counts. He also allowed me to test almost very lens in the shop on my M10 until I found one that met my requirements. He was very patient, but my wife was getting impatient with all of my trying on new lenses. I did not remind her about trying on different dresses! wlaidlaw Posted April 25, 2021 Author Share #14 Posted April 25, 2021 One of my brokers around the millennium was in Kiev, Ukraine, negotiating the insurance for the gas flowing through one of the large pipelines running through that country, which oddly is insured as marine cargo. He knew I was a Leica enthusiast and as a joke bought me a black "Luftwaffe Eigentum" so called Leica, which he paid $30 for. As it is liberally daubed with swastikas I have put it away in a cupboard but I cannibalised the Elmarised Industar lens for some of the tiny grub screws to repair a 2.8 Elmar-M which was missing a couple of the barrel screws. roydonian Posted April 27, 2021 Share #15 Posted April 27, 2021 Some years ago I spotted a "black Contax II" at a UK camera fair. It was so eye-catching that I was tempted to buy it.
pgk Posted April 27, 2021 Share #16 Posted April 27, 2021 (edited) The ultimate 'fake' Leica would of course, be to re-engrave a Leica with USSR markings .....🤭. Edited April 27, 2021 by pgk 1

Your comment reminded me of a camera I picked up a few years back - a photo of which i have posted here in the "Nicht...Kaviar" thread - it being a Black-Paint refinished Kiev 4. Post #205 for anyone curious as to how a B-P Contax II might look. IMO it would have been a very attractive offering; https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/318752-nicht-immer-nur-kaviar-english-version/page/11/?tab=comments#comment-4189622 Philip.
