Film cameras in general are getting more and more expensive.
Functioning film cameras are getting rarer and rarer.
List of not fixable cameras is getting longer and longer.
More and more people are excited about shooting film.
Films are getting more and more expensive thanks to Kodak investment to produce more of them.

It is the perfect storm to make brand new 4.5K€ analog M cameras a reasonable buy today.
Who would have thought that possible a couple of years ago ?

I am now lusting after a brand new MP.

  • nicci78 changed the title to Film cameras cost and brand new analog M.

Hello Nicci78,

You may order your brand new MP now, while it's not too late.

As side note, I thought that "new" film camera (while Leica launched M-A, late 2014) was something of short life "offering".

I was wrong, as Leica Camera still "offer" film MP/M-A new.

Side note two, reading that some new MP/M-A have "flaws" from new, here and other sites, I started (for some years now) thinking that new film M is no more like the good old days.

I think you are aware that one new M-A now, in North France ... after two exchanges (with two troubles different on each M-A), the user is waiting for another, third M-A hoping for "perfect unit".

Joke aside. I am a sucker for Black paint and I hate black chrome. So MP is an obvious choice. Especially with its brand new leatherette.
I used to discard every stock MP because I hate the shark skin so much.

So 2021 is the perfect storm for MP

You make me wanting MP 😇.

...again

after having had two MP, 0.85/0.72 at two periods.

I'd order with x0.85 VF if possible (nothing is impossible when one asks hard enough and willing to pay).

You are right. We anticipate that digital cameras will have a finite life and it comes as a bit of a surprise that mechancal cameras, whilst they should be repairable, are reliant of the abilities of technicians and the availability of spares. Cameras I owned and used like the Olympus OM-1 and Nikon FM seemed as though they would go on forever. And solid lumps like the Nikon F or F2 were built to last and take abuse. The reality is that many are old and in need of a good CLA or even repair neither of which is cheap and it is often uneconomic.

A few years ago Leica dealers were turning away M2s and M3s because they could not guarantee them due to potential repair costs. Today they have escalated in price and are now economic to service or repair and are on the dealer's shelves again. I wonder if we will see a similar price rise for 'classic' 35mm film cameras and their consequent usability become better?
