Looking forward to seeing how the V1 ASPH and FLE do compared to the APO.

Thank you for doing this! If possible, will you please include a couple of "real world" comparison shots at different distances?

Thanks, Hari.  I added a paragraph on bokeh to my post, in case you have further thoughts.

The ‘clicks’ I referred to are aperture clicks, not focusing, although I also care about smoothness of focus turn.

Thanks again.

Jeff

Hope this video is of help on the subject of the Aperture clicks, as well as focus mechanism and degree of focus throw:

Indeed, I really really dislike sloppy aperture clicks and a focus mechanism with low resistance.

Thanks very much for the video, it’s very helpful to see the aperture clicks, the detent, and focus throw(s).

Well I would not call mine nicely balanced. My Nokton, my pre asph Lux, or my cron v4 are nicely balanced. My APO is on the verge of tipping over. Sure it doesnt tip over like my pre fle, but if someone knocks into the table, it just might.

As for the aperture ring, it clicks nice, thank god, but mine is too fluid. It does not have enough resistance and its too close to the focus ring. So because the focus ring is so long, I often end up changing the aperture when focusing. While I'm not the first to report this, I think its just a matter of getting used to it and adapting the grip. Happens with many lenses. When I first tried the 28 summation, it was so small that I kept covering the lens with my fingers when focusing. Grip adaptation.

I guess it depends on what we use on a regular basis.

For me, the 21Lux, 28Lux, 35Lux, 50/1 v4, APO50, 75/1.4 and APO90 are in heavy rotation. So when a lens like the APO35 is on the camera and it doesn’t tip over, I find that nicely balanced.

Sorry to hear your sample has a fluid aperture ring. Would you mind sharing a video? It’s so much easier to share details via videos than words can convey.

+1. This is not unique to this lens and happens to me all the time with the 28/2.8asph, 35/2asph v1 and 35/2.8, when I leave the hood on. For this very reason I prefer to shoot these lenses without the hood on. Thanks to the focus ring on the APO35, this happens less frequently to me than with the aforementioned lenses.

In case you were wondering what’s going on in the first few seconds of the video, that’s the “front heaviness” test. If the APO35 is mounted on the camera, it doesn’t tip over. Even with the hood on. Nicely balanced.

Does it tip forward when you carry it on your shoulder/neck? Thanks

Quick video illustrating what I was saying earlier regarding the APO being front heavy. Sure, you can put it flat on on a table, unlike the 28lux or a noctilux ! But it isn’t stable and will easily tip over. This is without the hood too.

As for the aperture ring, I would love to make you a video but I’m not sure how you will see wether it’s too fluid on not. But if you have any suggestion how to go about it let me know.

cheers

It’s finally sunny today, I’m on my way out to test the lenses on one body.

In the meanwhile, I tried the tip forward test on an m10 classic, thinking maybe the weight of the safari had a role to play. Maybe it’s your plank that’s a bit tilted?

Take a look:

it doesn't at all

Oh man, now I want to trade in my FLE for the APO35 even more.... I really like the way 50APO renders but loves the 35 focal length. But I cant justify another big purchase since I've bought the M10R only a months ago.
