So I have dug deeper into the matter... a few days ago this EU Leica Boutique received a brand new M10-P Reporter and the date on the box is 2022/07/15 which kinda sets the bar on the Reporter being "sold out" in March last year (2021) very low... Here is the box sticker and the single unit of the Reporter camera they received (currently reserved for me).

Imagepower, your camera looks fantastic.

For those that are interested, Billingham introduced a sage/black combo. Sharp looking.

Given the fraying of the K****r on the Q2 reporter and the resulting discontent of Q2R owners, I would expect that we have seen the last of Leica special edition cameras covered in "that stuff which bullets can't shoot thru and mentioning the name of in describing it is forbidden by United Federation of Planets law."

Hi Al, once you receive your Reporter, may you share which EU Leica Boutique this was? Thanks

I use Aramid extensively in my professional life and Kevlar is a just a type of Aramid that Dupont developed for a specific purpose.  It's like the similarity between Gatorade and orange juice; there are many different types of orange juice but only one Gatorade owing to the additives that the company puts into it to make it Gatorade.

'Aramid' is an abbreviation of aromatic polyamide and is a class of chemical that can be developed to suit a need.  (Aromatic just means that it contains molecular rings, which provide strength and stability.)

Kevlar is a purpose-designed material in which Dupont used Aramid yarns to form a lightweight, strong, fabric.

I think someone at Leica dropped the ball and didn't properly check out whether they needed permission to use the trade name Kevlar.  Perhaps not surprising because it could be argued that "Kevlar" is in common usage and has entered the English language in the same way that "Hoover", "Bubble Wrap" and other eponyms have.

Ultimately, for the purpose that Leica has put it to, there would be no difference between using Aramid or Kevlar.

Pete.

That last bullet (no pun intended) point about outstanding protection is silly. But I'd hope anyone buying a Q2 would have enough common sense to realize that.

I assume using the Kevlar branding requires a lot of other licensing costs and restrictions, which is why Leica scrubbed that.

I just spent a half an hour on the phone with Wetzlar, the answer was (as always) “maybe it is and maybe it isn’t the last one, we cannot tell you because not even we  know what impulsive sudden decisions can follow in the future (from the management)”.

All of this would have been easily solved with the formal  Leica serial number tracking system they ended that in the 2000s because of several reasons, mainly digitalization (!!! Their words not mine).

They also explained that there are no batches of Limited additions with consecitive serial numbers anymore, there can be a few of those and then a few of regular production cameras, again a few limited edition ones etc. etc.

So someone at Wetzlar is just rolling the dice while they stamp out serial numbers?! One would hope there'd be an easy way to correspond serial numbers to manufacture years in the future.

And Al, if you end up finding another "last Reporter ever made", I'd be interested in taking that second-to-last Reporter off your hands. 😉  Congrats on that amazing find.

A serious Leica user would cover all that red to remain inconspicuous.  Black tape would work.
