None of the ones I know or have known would pay anything extra for the aesthetic differences

And that is their choice as much as it's anyone else's choice to acquire one who might have no aspirations as a PJ or war correspondent etc.

Is it 'fashion'?  I don't know.  I don't have one but I don't begrudge anyone who does.  The 'good' thing is that if anyone does want one then Leica has provided the opportunity to own one, which is great.

Why on earth must a kevlar clad, military green camera body be "validated" and "endorsed" by a "honest conflict photographer"? Are we back in the fifties? For your own pleasure perhaps? It is the year 2023. I can use it as a door stopper if I want to and not be answering to anyone. I paid for it with my honestly earned money, so it pretty much really isn't anyone's freaking business what I use my camera for. "Normal bodies for people who want to make pictures instead of buy mantle pieces"? I churn out 150K pictures a year and I do not even own a mantlepiece. I must be the bad guy here.

It doesn't need to of course.

Leica branding appeals to aspirations, emotions. It's obvious what the aspirational value of this tool is given the color and materials used, given the brand's history and even the name "reporter."

But - you yourself said you paid less for it than normal one. You don't have to agree with my opinion about it, nor defend it to me. In your situation if a given price for the same practical tool is the same then you're just choosing color and texture, so hey if you like the green cool. To be clear I wasn't even referring to your scenario (was referring to the aftermarket inflated prices that designate its collectible status) - but I mean, take it how you want. It does look silly to me and I would be pissed if i paid extra for a grip that started to fall apart way more quickly than the cheaper version.

Well of course it is fashion. There is no functional advantage.

I don't begrudge any owners - but I do despise the hype machine part of Leica branding that makes limited edition pieces of jewelry and that resellers put up for obscene prices. Leica could do a lot of things that help the world more than make another piece of collectible jewelry. But whatever, that's who they've been for a long time now - doesn't mean I won't call it ugly when the time is relevant.

I would absolutely love this camera, if I could only win the lottery!😇

It is very cool! It is a personal choice (after all, right?) that I surprisingly find quite attractive to me. I love a camera company that does all kinds of interesting things.😎

Bought one just a bit over $7K this year. Illogical? Yes, but it's beautiful. Put a frame line illumination window on it for fun.

Appreciate your help in my decision making.  I downgraded from a m11 to a m10p reporter (and m10r BP) and love it!

I mount a black 28mm Artisan on my Reporter. Ultracompact, it easily slides into a Alpacka modular sling which can do a vertical belt mount.

Sorry, photographing the color green correctly  is usually off, but the ALPAKA green is a very close match to the reporter.

A compact Sumarron 28 on a Reporter is a very compact set up that slips in a pocket.

This shot was of Josh Lehrer of Red dot forum fame using his hands to emphasize the importance of updating your firmware. Folks, use your reporter, don’t just look at it.

My absolute dream Leica - a Reporter version.

Actually I am using my M10-R (silver) as this was my absolute dream camera. Very satisfied with it. The reporter version is super sexy (but typically not what is photographed with it). Sometimes i wish my silver version could be more unobtrusive. Also searched for olive 3M skins (shame on me😉) - but the only way to make a silver version temporarily more unobtrusive seems to be a black sticker for the red dot and perhaps a black case?

Another way is for you to be more unobtrusive.  It might only be you that is conscious of your M10-R and you are unconsciously giving off signals that others pick-up on.

Another way again is to wear a fluorescent, yellow, hi-viz jacket when you're shooting.  People will notice the jacket but probably not notice your camera.  I've found that it's astonishing how few people take any notice of you when you're wearing a hi-viz jacket - it's as though they automatically ignore you because their brain tells them that you're working and there's nothing interesting to see.

Very good point. Will remind me of that in my next walk.

The green is nice but if I bought one the kevlar thing is the first thing to go. I would wrap it in leather. That Kevlar really looks bad to me. Especially worn.

Definitely the best looking green combo is the Leica M10P Safari with a silver lens. The M10P Safari looks so much better than the reporter.

With 20K budget, the most desirable camera & lens combo at this point time for me was M10-P Reporter + 28mm Summicron Matte Paint combo with Match Technical Thumb grip & Arte Di Mano case. So I went and got it!
