malligator Posted November 28, 2021 Share #61  Posted November 28, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) My buddy and I go fishing...A LOT...so I find myself in the middle of Puget Sound surrounded by gorgeous photo opportunities. Unfortunately, 50mm is my longest lens--on my M-A and my iPhone. I'm surrounded by mountains, wildlife, boats, and clouds. We also go out before dawn so the light is almost always perfect--even when it's cloudy. However, I'm stuck in the 8'x8' back deck of the boat. Would the 135mm reach out enough to get some good compressed landscape shots so I can stop taking photos like the one below or is that the purview of a DSLR with a 70-200? NB Pic was obviously NOT taken with a 135mm Telyt, but I needed it as an example. It's a crappy snapshot taken with the longer lens of my iPhone (50mm equiv, I think). 8CB69700-FEE9-4007-A3F4-2A37B4287D81.heic

RayD28 Posted December 27, 2021 Share #62  Posted December 27, 2021 My experience with any lens above 50mm was with a Nikon D800 DSLR.  The 70-200mm VRII f2.8 (VR=vibration reduction).  A 135 Tely might fill a gap that I occasionally miss.  A few questions, please: 1. Do you feel the need for a magnifier if you don't use a visioflex?  For film I use an MP or M3.  I believe I'd be ok with the M3 but not sure for the MP. 2. When using digital, do you feel comfortable using only the VF or do you prefer using a visioflex or live view?

Considering that you're on the water, in a small boat, could you hold the camera steady enough to capture a decent image?  Beautiful scene - could your buddy get in much closer to the land for a while, so you could capture good images with your 50mm? If you've got an M-A, I guess there's no way to use a Visoflex.  Maybe you could try one of those devices made for shooting video, that keep the camera pointed where you want even when "you" are not able to stand still.  They've got a gyro or something that keeps the camera steady despite those issues.  If you go out before dawn, I guess you get lots of beautiful sunrise photos?  Maybe something like this? Camera stabilizer?? Edited December 27, 2021 by MikeMyers

ValkyrieFalling Posted January 20, 2022 Share #67 Â Posted January 20, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) A lot of respect for those using the 135 purely through the viewfinder. There are some fantastic photos in this collection. Is a magnifier necessary if focusing through the 0.72x viewfinder? TIA.

rsolomon Posted January 26, 2022 Share #74  Posted January 26, 2022 I don't have the 135, I'm looking for a used copy... they are tough to find at a good price.  my question is do you use this lens often, im not big into landscape at the moment and see its use mostly there  Rich
adan Posted January 26, 2022 Share #75  Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) I use 135 often enough that I specifically bought the M10 for it (higher ISOs for an f/4 lens indoors, plus the M10's re-engineered and more precise rangefinder). A few years back on a trip to Europe, I carried both a 135 and a 90 (along with wides). When I started editing the 90mm pix, I found I was cropping a lot of them to nearly 135 framing, which was also a strong hint which lens suited my eye more naturally. And I've been using the 135 even more since I started shooting the bands each month at the gallery. As to price - the APO is terrific and modern, but also has a modern Leica price. Although one can sometimes find the pre-6-bit APO lenses for $2200 or so, and they don't really need the coding except for EXIF (and maybe Auto ISO shutter limits). I'm currently using the pre-APO Tele-Elmar f/4.0, and those have always been one of the great "cheap thrills" in Leicadom. As low as $450, up to $1295 or so for the last version (they were made for 30 years 1964-1994, in a few barrel styles). And their images are about 95% of the APO output (less contrast, a tiny bit more red fringing at f/4.0, 50-100 grams heavier, a half-stop slower, but a bit less tendency to flare in backlight). Mine is like the middle version (smooth knurling, no hood, 1988 S/N). Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! But I do occasionally dream of the extra half-stop of speed and extra "sparkle" of the APO-Telyt-M. Always keeping my eyes peeled. Since this is supposed to be an image thread, here's an image - WITH an 135 APO-Telyt-M, a couple of years ago. I had a copy of this lens, excellent. I also still have the original 1960s vers. which is no slouch either, but not as sharp over longer distances as the later versions. This was taken on a flat grey early evening @ 1/40s - with the 135mm f4 1962 vers. & M9 at Zuka Game Res. S Africa (please click on image for better res.) Welcome, dear visitor!
